On March 11, GasBuddy data reported by the Santa Monica Daily Press put the national average at $3.45 per gallon and the Los Angeles average at $5.18. The report did not identify the station charging more than $8, or establish its fuel grade, exact date, or payment terms.
What did the $8 gas-price report actually say?
The March 11, 2026, report described isolated reports of stations charging more than $8 per gallon. Its other figures came from a GasBuddy survey compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 stations nationwide. Those figures measure different things:
| Measure | Reported price | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. average | $3.45 per gallon | GasBuddy national average on March 11, 2026; reported as up 51.1 cents in a week. |
| Los Angeles average | $5.18 per gallon | GasBuddy metro-area average on March 11, 2026; reported as up 53.2 cents in a week. |
| Most expensive sampled Los Angeles station | $6.49 per gallon | Highest price in the report’s Los Angeles survey snapshot. |
| California range | $3.71 to $7.09 per gallon | Statewide low and high reported in the survey. |
| Isolated reports above $8 | More than $8 per gallon | Station reports mentioned by the article; no specific station, grade, date, or payment terms were established. |
The figures are not contradictory: an average summarizes many observations, while a high records a costly location in a particular sample. The report’s $7.09 California high and its mention of isolated prices above $8 also refer to different observations; the source does not establish that they describe the same station or sampling details. The Santa Monica Daily Press report is the basis for these March 11 figures.
How much did average U.S. gas cost as prices rose?
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) monthly series gives a consistent national comparison for regular gasoline, in dollars per gallon including taxes. These are monthly averages, not live pump quotes:

| Month in 2026 | U.S. regular-gasoline monthly average |
|---|---|
| March | $3.638 per gallon |
| April | $4.103 per gallon |
| May | $4.479 per gallon |
| June | $4.050 per gallon |
| July | $3.932 per gallon |
| August | $4.058 per gallon |
The monthly series shows the national average rising from March through May, then easing in June and July before ticking up in August. EIA’s monthly retail gasoline price data are useful for comparing months on the same basis; they do not tell you what a particular station charged.
How did local and weekly prices compare?
State and weekly averages can show how a region differs from the national trend, but they should be labeled by geography and observation date. EIA recorded California regular reformulated gasoline at $5.650 per gallon for the week of March 23, $5.785 for the week of April 27, and $5.678 for the week of September 7, 2026. Those are weekly state averages, not station-level prices. The series is available in EIA’s weekly state gasoline price data.

For the week of October 5, 2026, EIA’s weekly U.S. average for regular gasoline was $6.227 per gallon. That is a dated national weekly average, not a real-time quote or a price for the unidentified station in the March report. See EIA’s weekly U.S. gasoline price data.
A separate March 31 report from UPI said the U.S. average had reached $4.01 per gallon and described a New York City station displaying regular gasoline above $7, with some other grades just short of $8. That example reinforces why a station sign—especially when grades differ—cannot stand in for a national regular-gasoline average. Read UPI’s March 31 report for that dated snapshot.

Why did gas prices rise so quickly?
In March 2026, GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan attributed the rapid increase to oil-market reactions to conflict and concern about the possibility of prolonged disruption to supply flows, as reported by the Santa Monica Daily Press. That is a contemporaneous explanation for the market reaction at the time, not a complete calculation of why every station set its price or why prices later changed.
Crude-oil market movements can affect what drivers pay, but an individual pump price is not determined by the national average alone. The figures cited here establish differences across national, state, metro, and station-level observations; they do not identify the specific causes behind the unidentified over-$8 price.

How to interpret a gas-price headline
- Check the geography: A national figure, a state average, a metro average, and one station answer different questions.
- Check the date and frequency: A monthly average, weekly average, and one-day survey snapshot are not interchangeable.
- Check the fuel: Regular gasoline is not the same comparison as premium, another grade, or diesel.
- Check what is known about the posted price: The March report did not establish the over-$8 station’s grade or whether the displayed price depended on cash or credit.
- Use averages for broad comparisons, not as a promise about your local pump: A station can be far above or below a regional or national average.
