They are different branded card options, but neither is limited to the platform named on the card. Regional rules and purchase eligibility still apply.
What is the difference between Xbox and Microsoft gift cards?
Microsoft describes the cards as working the same way once redeemed: their value goes into a Microsoft account balance. That means an Xbox gift card is not limited to Xbox purchases, and a Microsoft gift card is not required for Windows or other Microsoft Store purchases. The products available depend on the country or region. Microsoft Support explains the shared redemption behavior and eligible Store contexts.

What can you buy with the balance?
The balance can be used for eligible items sold through Microsoft Store online, on Windows, or on Xbox. In most countries and regions, Microsoft says it can also be used for Surface, Xbox, and accessories; hardware purchases are not supported with gift cards in Taiwan. Available items vary by location.
Subscriptions have an important limitation
Microsoft says gift-card balance can be used for Xbox subscriptions, but not Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Eligibility can depend on the specific item and checkout, so check the payment options shown before relying on the balance for a subscription. How to choose the right card
Since post-redemption use is the same, choose based on the recipient and the terms attached to the card rather than the branding alone.
- Check the recipient’s country and account region. Currency denominations and redemption eligibility can be restricted by jurisdiction; balances cannot be converted into another currency.
- Match the account that will redeem it. The value is credited to the Microsoft account used during redemption and cannot be transferred to another account.
- Check the intended purchase. Product and subscription eligibility can vary, and hardware rules are not identical in every region.
- Review the specific card terms. Retailer listings and promotional cards can have terms that differ from ordinary account balance. Microsoft’s gift card information and Microsoft Services Agreement describe applicable conditions.
How to redeem either card
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the money.
- Open Microsoft’s gift card or code redemption page.
- Enter or paste the code and confirm redemption.
Check the signed-in account before confirming: the value cannot be moved afterward. If you bought the wrong code, Microsoft advises contacting the retailer.

What happens if the balance does not cover the purchase?
Microsoft account balance is applied first, and you can use another payment method for the remaining amount when that option is available. The balance itself is not transferable between accounts. Microsoft’s spending guidance covers using a second payment method for a shortfall.

Microsoft’s terms say ordinary, non-promotional account balance does not expire and has no fees. Promotional balance is governed by the specific promotion’s terms and may expire. Gift cards generally cannot be exchanged for cash except where applicable law provides otherwise; retailer return policies and local rules may also matter. Review the Microsoft Services Agreement and the card’s terms for the applicable region.
