Amazon MGM Studios now has creative control over future James Bond productions, but it did not become the franchise’s sole owner. Amazon MGM, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli remain co-owners through a joint venture that closed on March 24, 2025. Amazon’s latest official update, published May 14, 2026, says casting for the next film had begun; it did not identify the next actor or a release date.
What Amazon’s Bond deal changed
The deal shifted creative authority over future Bond productions to Amazon MGM Studios while keeping Wilson and Broccoli as co-owners. The arrangement was announced on February 20, 2025, and Amazon later recorded that it closed on March 24, 2025. Amazon’s announcement says the joint venture houses the franchise’s intellectual property rights and that the parties “will remain co-owners of the franchise.”

That distinction matters: creative control describes who leads decisions about future productions; it does not mean Amazon owns the franchise outright. The announcement does not publish the joint venture’s financial terms or explain its detailed operating procedures.
Distribution rights are not the same as creative control
Amazon said it already held rights to distribute all James Bond films following its acquisition of MGM. Distribution concerns making films available to audiences; the 2025 arrangement added creative control over future productions. The two roles should not be conflated: having distribution rights did not, by itself, make Amazon the sole owner or establish that it controlled the creative direction of new films.

What Wilson and Broccoli said about stepping back
Michael G. Wilson said he was stepping back from producing the films to focus on art and charitable projects, adding that he and Broccoli agreed it was time for Amazon MGM Studios to lead Bond into the future. Broccoli said that, following No Time to Die and Wilson’s retirement from the films, she wanted to focus on other projects. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the company was honored to continue the franchise’s heritage.

Amazon announced Villeneuve as director and Lapointe as executive producer on June 25, 2025, and announced Knight as screenwriter on July 31, 2025. The studio’s May 2026 update said casting had begun and that it did not plan to comment on specific details during that process. It named no actor to play Bond and gave no release date. Those details remain unannounced in the cited official update; rumors should not be treated as confirmed casting or scheduling.

Amazon has not disclosed the financial terms or a valuation for the Bond joint venture in the cited announcements. The figure sometimes mentioned alongside the MGM acquisition—more than 4,000 films and 17,000 television shows—described MGM’s catalog in Amazon’s 2022 announcement. It is not a valuation of Bond or of this deal.
