Is Austrian Airlines still flying to Tehran?
Austrian Airlines’ 4 August 2026 half-year statement says it temporarily suspended flights to Amman, Erbil, Tel Aviv and Tehran for safety reasons. It describes the suspensions as having substantially affected the airline’s first-half earnings, but does not give a current route schedule or dates for resuming service. The statement is evidence of the airline’s announced suspensions at that time, not confirmation of an individual flight’s status on 7 October.
Austrian Wings reported on 23 March 2026 that many Austrian and Lufthansa Group Middle East flights were planned to remain suspended through 24 October, with Tel Aviv subject to a different end date in the plan then reported. That is a dated schedule report, not a live update or proof of what Austrian will do after 24 October. For a current answer, search the exact flight number and date in Austrian’s flight-status service and check the booking details before leaving for the airport.
Why are airlines avoiding Iranian airspace?
EASA’s Iran advisory, CZIB-2026-04-R2, recommends that the operators covered by it do not operate within Tehran FIR (OIIX), at any altitude or flight level. EASA’s 30 September 2026 revision is listed as active through 16 November 2026 unless reviewed earlier. The recommendation calls on covered operators to monitor developments and follow aeronautical publications and national-authority guidance.

EASA says its warning reflects military tensions and possible military action, the potential use of weapons and air-defence systems, the risk that an aircraft could be misidentified, and the possibility that conflict could resume. Those are the safety concerns cited by EASA; the advisory itself does not identify which airlines have chosen particular cancellations or diversions.
Who the recommendation covers
The advisory applies to EU operators covered by Regulation (EU) 965/2012 and third-country operators authorised by EASA when operating under that authorisation to, from or within the EU. It is an operator safety recommendation for a defined area, not a public declaration that all airlines must take the same route decision.

What the geographic limit means
Tehran FIR (OIIX) is the specific flight information region named in this advisory. EASA lists separate advisories for Iran and other regional areas, so this warning should not be extended into a blanket claim about every country or route in the Middle East. A route may also be affected by an airline’s own operational decision even when a particular segment is outside the named FIR.
Is it safe to fly over Iran right now?
The practical answer for passengers is to treat EASA’s active recommendation as a serious safety advisory, while recognizing that EASA addresses covered operators rather than certifying an individual flight as safe or unsafe. It does not establish that Iranian airspace is legally closed, nor does it prove that every airline has stopped using it. Decisions about an itinerary depend on the operating carrier, the exact route and current operational conditions.

For broader regional context, consult the latest EASA advisory index and the current guidance relevant to the route. Do not assume that an advisory for Tehran FIR automatically describes all neighboring airspace.
What should I do if my Austrian Airlines flight is cancelled?
- Check the exact flight. Use Austrian’s current flight-status and booking tools to search your flight number and travel date. The airline’s surfaced irregularities information includes older suspension dates, so a route notice alone may not reflect your itinerary’s live status.
- Review your booking for changes. Austrian says affected customers are generally rebooked free of charge, usually automatically, and directs passengers to its booking tools for status and adjustments. This describes its normal handling, not an unconditional promise for every itinerary or disruption.
- Keep contact details current. Make sure the phone number and email address on your booking can receive airline notifications, and check them before setting out for the airport.
- Confirm arrangements before spending more. If you are considering a separate ticket, hotel or other non-refundable expense, first check the status of your original booking and the terms that apply to it. The cited airline information does not establish that every additional expense will be reimbursed.
What the suspensions mean for Austrian’s finances
Austrian’s 4 August half-year statement said the temporary safety-related suspensions had a substantial adverse effect on earnings, described as a double-digit million-euro figure. The airline also reported that fuel costs in the first half of 2026 were more than €60 million above the prior-year level despite hedging. Those figures describe the company’s reported financial pressures; they do not measure the risk on any individual flight.
