Those sources show what the company is doing and aiming for—not that culture alone caused business success.
How Tractor Supply encourages employees to innovate
In a December 9, 2025, Computerworld feature, Tractor Supply’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, Rob Mills, described a range of ways the retailer supports employee development and innovation.

Learning connected to frontline work
IT employees are encouraged to spend time in stores, and job shadowing lets employees explore other roles. The purpose is to help people understand how work happens across the business, rather than treating innovation as a technology department’s concern alone.
Company-wide forums and development
The company holds quarterly town halls and a week-long, conference-style Learning EXPO-RAMA. It also hosts hackathons and has university partnerships intended to support career development, innovation and a future talent pipeline. Mills said, “All these vehicles for training and development help our team members drive innovation.”

The feature also describes a town hall where employees were encouraged to share how they were using AI. Mills said that after a public announcement that ChatGPT 5 would roll out across the organization three days after its announcement, more than 1,500 attendees cheered. That is an anecdote attributed to Mills, not a representative survey of employee opinion.
How the company connects culture with technology and operations
Tractor Supply’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes the Tractor Value System as an internal continuous-improvement framework. The company says it combines the framework with data analytics and team-member engagement to review processes and identify opportunities to reduce costs and support innovation. It sets annual productivity and cost-improvement goals and provides training on continuous-improvement practices.

The filing also says Tractor Supply invests in IT and implements or assesses computer vision, automation, advanced analytics and responsible AI. It is evaluating robotics, robotic process automation and edge computing as possible efficiency tools. These are company-reported activities and areas under consideration; they should not be read as proof that each has produced a particular financial result.
In the same filing, management identifies digitizing customer experiences, testing products and services, improving operational excellence and expanding supply-chain capabilities as parts of its long-term growth strategy. It presents technology and automation as tools for profitable growth, margin improvement and cost reduction—stated aims, not independently verified outcomes.

Why retail scale matters to the strategy
Tractor Supply reported 2,602 stores across 49 states as of December 27, 2025: 2,395 Tractor Supply stores and 207 Petsense by Tractor Supply stores. Its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says the company opened 99 Tractor Supply stores and five Petsense stores that year, and planned approximately 100 additional Tractor Supply store openings in fiscal 2026. The planned openings are a forecast, not a completed result.
At that scale, store operations, customer-facing technology and supply-chain systems are practical parts of the innovation picture. The company’s filings describe investments and priorities across those areas, while the Computerworld feature emphasizes employee learning and firsthand familiarity with store work.

What the workplace recognition does—and does not—show
Computerworld ranked Tractor Supply No. 1 among large companies in its Best Places to Work in IT 2026 list. The company’s 2026 proxy statement also notes the recognition. The ranking is evidence of recognition in an IT workplace program; it does not establish that culture caused company growth or that every employee has the same experience.
The proxy says Tractor Supply and Petsense had approximately 26,000 full-time and 26,000 part-time team members as of December 27, 2025. It also describes leadership development programs, online product-knowledge training made with key vendors, periodic store meetings and an annual store leadership meeting with strategic updates and hands-on learning.
Keep the ranking years distinct: in a December 19, 2024, company announcement, Tractor Supply said it ranked 46th in the Large Organizations category of Computerworld’s 2025 list. That earlier result is not the later No. 1 ranking for 2026.
What the evidence supports
- Reported practices: store immersion, job shadowing, training, hackathons, university ties and company-wide forums.
- Company-stated operating approach: continuous improvement paired with analytics, employee engagement and training.
- Technology priorities: digital customer experiences, automation, analytics and responsible AI, alongside other tools being evaluated.
- Evidence boundary: the sources describe programs, intentions, scale and workplace recognition, but do not quantify a causal effect of innovation culture on financial performance.
Mills summarized the company’s people-first framing this way: “My belief is you hire for compatibility and train for core competencies.” He also said, “For employees with an ability to learn, we are willing to invest and teach.” These statements describe his view of the company’s approach; they are not a measured assessment of every hiring or development decision.
