What the Apple Watch battery settlement covers
In Smith et al. v. Apple Inc., Case No. 4:21-cv-09527, plaintiffs alleged that battery swelling in certain Apple Watches could cause a screen to detach, crack or shatter, potentially exposing sharp edges. The settlement materials describe those allegations; they do not establish that the watches exploded or that Apple was liable. Apple denied that the covered watches had battery-swelling issues and denied wrongdoing, as stated in the official settlement notice.
The court approved the settlement as fair, adequate and reasonable on May 1, 2025. It entered final judgment on May 9, 2025. Neither action was a trial verdict on whether the watches had a defect or Apple caused one. The final approval order records the court’s approval finding and the final judgment applies the settlement terms to the defined class.
Who qualified for the settlement?
Eligibility required all parts of the class definition—not merely owning an older Apple Watch. The class covered natural persons who lived in the United States and owned or previously owned a first-generation, Series 1, Series 2 or Series 3 Apple Watch for personal or household use. Apple’s records also had to show a US-reported issue potentially related to battery swelling during the class period, April 24, 2015, through February 6, 2024. - Ownership and use: You owned it, currently or previously, for personal or household use.
- Residence: You were a US resident.
- Recorded report: Apple’s records showed that you reported a potentially battery-swell-related issue in the US.
- Dates: The ownership and report had to fall within the April 24, 2015–February 6, 2024 class period.
Owning one of the listed models by itself did not make someone eligible. If you are unsure whether Apple’s records included you, the official FAQ directs you to contact the settlement administrator.
Was a claim form required?
No separate claim form was required for class members identified through Apple’s records. The administrator instructed those people to confirm or update payment details, or select a payment method, by April 10, 2025. That deadline has passed. The official FAQ listed physical check, electronic check, ACH transfer and virtual prepaid Visa or Mastercard as payment methods.

The settlement site lists interim post-distribution accounting documents, but the available information does not establish whether someone who missed the deadline can still change payment details or take another step. Contact the settlement administrator for a current answer; do not assume that a late request will be accepted or rejected.
How much was the Apple Watch settlement payment?
Apple agreed to fund a $20 million non-reversionary settlement fund. That is the gross fund, not the amount paid directly to class members: administration, notice, attorneys’ fees and costs, and service awards are accounted for before distributions under the allocation plan.

The two per-device figures are estimates from different settlement materials, not promises of a fixed payment. The amount an individual received depended on allocation and was capped at $50 per covered watch.
What is the settlement’s status now?
Final approval was granted May 1, 2025, and final judgment was entered May 9, 2025. The payment-selection deadline was April 10, 2025, so it is no longer open. The official documents page lists an Interim Post Distribution Accounting and a Second Interim Post Distribution Accounting. Their contents are not established by the available information, so it is not possible to say from those listings whether all payments were sent, whether funds remain, or whether late payment details can be corrected.

What the court’s notice figures do—and do not—show
In its 2025 order, the district court reported that, as of March 19, 2025, direct notice had been sent to 525,542 class members, or 97.05%. The administrator also reported 1,285 calls totaling 4,614 minutes to the settlement telephone line, 19 exclusions and no objections as of March 19, 2025. These are notice and fairness-review figures; they are not counts of payments made, people paid or current class-member views.
