The available accounts describe different benefits in different sales channels: Apple campus-store terms list AirPods with eligible devices, while reporting on the national promotion describes Apple Gift Cards. The available sources do not establish that other offers were better; that claim requires dated, like-for-like pricing.
What Apple’s 2022 Back to School promotion included
The benefit depended on the sales channel documented. Apple’s 2022 terms reproduced in an authorized campus-store PDF describe eligible Mac or iPad purchases bundled with AirPods. The terms list second-generation AirPods (model MV7N2AM/A) with no additional upgrade cost, or an upgrade for $50 to third-generation AirPods (MME73AM/A) or $120 to AirPods Pro (MLWK3AM/A). A contemporaneous account of Apple’s national U.S. promotion describes a different benefit: a $150 Apple Gift Card with eligible Macs and a $100 gift card with eligible iPads. It also reports education discounts of $100 off Macs and $50 off iPads, plus 20% off AppleCare. MacRumors likewise reported that the promotion offered up to a $150 gift card. Which Macs and iPads were eligible?
Eligibility varied by channel and by model. The national-promotion FAQ lists MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (13-, 14- and 16-inch), and 24-inch iMac, along with iPad Air and 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The campus-store PDF lists iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Pro and iPad Air, and explicitly excludes ninth-generation iPad and iPad mini. Who could qualify, and could parents buy?
The campus-store terms cover higher-education faculty and staff, students attending or accepted into a U.S. higher-education institution, and parents purchasing on behalf of an eligible student. They require proof of qualification before purchase, limit promotion products to one per eligible Mac and one per eligible iPad per qualified purchaser, and exclude institutional, enterprise, government, nonprofit and business purchases. The national-promotion FAQ also describes possible eligibility for K–12 employees, homeschool teachers, serving school board members, and elected or appointed PTA/PTO executives. What happened if a buyer returned the device?
Under the campus-store terms, returning the eligible Mac or iPad—or exchanging it for an ineligible item—could require returning the promotion product in its original packaging, or result in the promotion savings being deducted from the refund or exchange amount. The national FAQ says the promotion product had to be returned for a full refund; if it was missing, redeemed or not returned, its full original value could be deducted. The available sources establish Apple’s promotion but do not provide comparable competitor checkout prices, so they cannot prove that another deal was better. To make that judgment responsibly, compare the same model and configuration on the same date, using the final education-eligible checkout price and accounting for taxes or fees where relevant. Then value the promotional benefit according to whether it would be useful to you: an Apple Gift Card has value if you expect to make another Apple purchase, while AirPods may be more useful if you wanted headphones anyway.

Apple’s separate institutional MacBook Air flyer is not a like-for-like alternative for individual students. It describes a limited-time buyback offer for qualifying public, tax-exempt education institutions ordering at least 100 devices. For one 128GB MacBook Air example, the flyer gives a $459 initial payment against a $779 education list price, followed by a $320 balance after three years; the amounts varied by configuration.
