In 2024, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) issued a complaint alleging that Apple maintained nationwide workplace rules that unlawfully restricted employees’ rights. The complaint is an allegation, not a finding that Apple violated the law. Apple disputed the claims.
What did the NLRB complaint allege?
Reuters reported that the complaint accused Apple of requiring employees nationwide to sign confidentiality, nondisclosure and noncompete agreements, and of maintaining overly broad misconduct and social-media policies. It alleged that these rules interfered with, restrained or coerced employees exercising rights under federal labor law.
Those claims describe what the agency alleged; they should not be read as established violations. The complaint focused on workplace rules, rather than a consumer product or Apple’s financial performance.
How did Apple respond?
Apple said it respected employees’ rights to discuss wages, hours and working conditions. The company strongly disagreed with the claims and said it would share the facts at a hearing, Reuters reported. That was Apple’s response, not an independent determination of the complaint’s merits.

Has the nationwide rules complaint been decided?
The public NLRB docket for case 32-CA-287367 is listed as open. It shows an amended consolidated complaint and a dismissal letter dated September 26, 2025, followed by additional activity, including a Regional Director order dated October 1, 2026. The docket listing does not explain whether those entries resolve the specific nationwide rules allegations. On the information available in that listing, it would be inaccurate to say the complaint has been finally decided either way.
The NLRB’s general process is that, after a Regional Director issues a complaint, an administrative law judge hears the case and issues a decision and recommended order. The parties may appeal to the Board; a final Board order in a contested unfair-labor-practice case may then be reviewed by a federal court of appeals. This describes the agency’s process, not a finding or outcome in Apple’s case.

Is this the Apple case the Board dismissed in 2026?
No. In a May 2026 summary, the NLRB said it dismissed case 32-CA-306609, which involved different allegations: threats, coercion, interrogation, discipline and discharge. That dismissal is not the outcome of the nationwide workplace-rules complaint, case 32-CA-287367.
There was also separate reporting by the Los Angeles Times about an Oakland complaint involving allegations related to employee discussions, Slack and social-media activity, communications with journalists, and management responses connected to former Apple engineer Cher Scarlett. The reported potential remedies in that matter included reinstatement, back pay, an apology, notices and training. Those allegations and requested remedies should not be treated as part of the nationwide rules case unless the case records establish that connection.

The central issue is whether the challenged rules unlawfully restricted employees’ federally protected labor rights. A complaint signals that the NLRB is asserting a violation; it does not, by itself, prove that an employer broke the law. The public docket’s later entries are relevant procedural activity, but their descriptions alone do not settle the merits of this specific dispute.
