1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShort answer: IG is usually the better all-round choice for traders who want the largest market range, strong research and a mature platform ecosystem. CMC Markets is often the better fit for active traders who care about charting, fast execution tools, a broad CFD selection and, in the UK, commission-free share dealing.
Neither broker is automatically cheaper. The right choice depends on your country, whether you want CFDs, spread betting or investments, how often you trade, and whether you need MetaTrader or TradingView. This comparison focuses mainly on the UK, because both firms offer different products and protections through separate legal entities around the world.

The important distinction is that “IG” and “CMC Markets” are brand names rather than single worldwide products. Your available instruments, leverage, fees, tax treatment, compensation scheme and account protections are determined by the regulated company serving your address.
IG: where it stands out
Broad market coverage
IG has built its reputation around giving retail traders access to a large selection of markets. Depending on the country and account type, that can include forex, stock indices, individual shares, commodities, treasuries, options, futures, ETFs, cryptocurrencies and investment products.

That breadth is useful if you do not want to maintain accounts with several brokers. A trader might use the same provider for a UK share portfolio, an occasional FTSE 100 spread bet and foreign-exchange trading. It does not mean every instrument is available in every account: a cash share, a share CFD and a spread bet are different products with different costs and tax consequences.
Research and education
IG is generally the stronger choice for built-in research. Its offering commonly includes market news, economic-calendar tools, analyst commentary, trading ideas, charting and educational material. The exact research package can vary by location and account type, but IG has traditionally invested heavily in helping users analyse markets before placing a trade.
This matters more to a developing trader than having another dozen technical indicators. Useful questions to ask are:
- Can you filter the economic calendar by currency or importance?
- Are fundamental announcements linked to the affected instruments?
- Can you save watchlists and alerts across web and mobile?
- Does the research explain the trade-off, or merely present a directional signal?
Platforms
IG offers its own web and mobile platforms, and in some regions also supports third-party platforms or specialist products. Its proprietary platform is designed to accommodate both occasional traders and more experienced users, although the number of menus and available markets can make the first session feel busy.
IG is a better candidate if you want a broker with several account and platform routes. Confirm the specific route before opening an account: platform access may differ between spread betting, CFD, share dealing and investment accounts.
CMC Markets: where it stands out
Advanced proprietary platform
CMC Markets’ main strength is its trading interface. The web platform is built around configurable charts, watchlists, order tickets and integrated market analysis. Active traders can arrange multiple charts, add technical studies, create price alerts and monitor positions without constantly changing screens.
CMC also offers tools such as pattern-recognition features, client-sentiment information and third-party research in certain services. These tools are not a substitute for a trading plan, but they can make the platform more useful for traders who want analysis close to the order screen.
CFD and spread-betting choice
For UK clients, CMC is particularly attractive if you want to compare spread betting with CFD trading. Both are leveraged products, but they are not interchangeable:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Spread betting: the trade is sized by a cash amount per point. UK spread-betting profits are generally free of capital-gains tax, although individual circumstances and tax rules matter.
- CFDs: the trade represents a number of units of an instrument. Commissions, financing and tax treatment can differ from spread betting.
Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains. A small deposit should never be mistaken for a small risk.
Share dealing
CMC’s UK share-dealing service is a major reason long-term investors may prefer it. The attraction is not simply a headline commission rate: investors should also check foreign-exchange charges, market-data costs, dividend handling, transfer fees and whether the account can be held in the tax wrapper they need.
IG also offers share dealing and investment services in relevant markets, so compare the complete tariff rather than assuming the CFD pricing page applies to an investment account.
Fees: which broker is cheaper?
There is no honest single answer. Brokers can appear cheap on commission while recovering revenue through spreads, financing or currency conversion. Compare the cost of the exact trade you intend to place.

For CFD and spread-bet traders
Check these five items:
- Spread: compare the normal spread, not only the minimum advertised spread.
- Overnight funding: a position held for several nights can cost more than the opening spread.
- Commission: share CFDs often have a percentage or per-share commission, sometimes with a minimum charge.
- Currency conversion: trading a US-dollar instrument from a sterling account can create a conversion cost on the transaction, profit or loss.
- Guaranteed stops and inactivity: these optional or account-level charges can materially change the total cost.
For a short-term, heavily traded forex strategy, the spread and execution model may dominate. For a position held for weeks, overnight financing can matter far more. For occasional share-CFD trades, the minimum commission may be the deciding factor.
For investors buying shares
Compare a complete example rather than a banner:
| Cost to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Dealing commission | A zero commission offer may apply only to particular markets or order types. |
| FX conversion | Relevant when buying overseas shares or receiving foreign-currency dividends. |
| Account or custody fee | A small recurring charge can outweigh a low dealing fee for a modest portfolio. |
| Market-data fee | Some exchanges charge for live prices. |
| Dividend and corporate-action treatment | Important for long-term holders and overseas securities. |
| Tax-wrapper availability | An ISA or equivalent account can matter more than a small dealing-price difference. |
Platforms and tools
Choose IG if you value extensive market information, a mature ecosystem and access to a wide range of markets from one account.
Choose CMC Markets if charting and order management are central to your process. CMC’s interface tends to appeal to traders who want to customise screens and analyse several instruments at once.

Do not assume that a broker’s brand-wide platform list applies to you. Before signing up, check the product page for your country and confirm:
- whether MT4, MT5 or TradingView is available;
- whether the platform connects to the account type you want;
- whether automated trading is permitted;
- whether mobile and web watchlists synchronise;
- how orders behave during market gaps and fast markets.
Demo accounts and customer support
Both brokers provide practice environments in relevant markets, but a demo is not a perfect simulation of live trading. Spreads can differ, orders may fill more easily than they would during a volatile session, and losses in virtual money do not test your actual risk tolerance.
Use a demo to test the mechanics:
- Create a watchlist of the instruments you genuinely intend to trade.
- Place market, limit and stop orders.
- Check where the platform displays overnight funding.
- Try changing the stop-loss after the trade is open.
- Download a statement and confirm how realised profit and loss is reported.
- Repeat the exercise on the mobile app, not just the desktop platform.
IG and CMC both provide help resources and customer-support channels, but response times and telephone availability depend on the local entity. If rapid help matters, test support with a practical question before depositing money.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regulation and protection
For UK retail clients, both IG and CMC Markets operate through FCA-regulated entities. Typical UK retail protections can include segregated client money, limits on CFD leverage, margin close-out rules and negative-balance protection. Eligible compensation arrangements may apply if a regulated firm fails, but the limits and eligibility rules should be checked directly with the relevant scheme.
These protections do not protect you from a bad trade. Segregated money is not the same as protection against market losses, and negative-balance protection does not stop an account from falling sharply before a position is closed.

Which broker is better for you?
| Your priority | Likely better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Widest range of markets and research | IG | Its core proposition is broad market access supported by extensive analysis tools. |
| Highly configurable charts and active trading | CMC Markets | Its proprietary platform is a strong part of the offering. |
| UK spread betting | Either | Compare the actual spread, financing and platform you will use. |
| UK long-term share investing | Compare both tariffs | Account type, FX costs and tax-wrapper availability matter more than the brand. |
| Automated or third-party trading | Whichever supports your exact setup | Platform availability varies by country and account. |
| New trader wanting simplicity | Usually CMC Markets | Its core interface can feel more focused, while IG’s breadth can be overwhelming. |
| Experienced trader wanting one established provider | Usually IG | Its market range and research may reduce the need for additional accounts. |
How to make the final choice
- Enter your residence and select the exact product: investment, spread betting or CFD.
- Download both brokers’ current fee schedules.
- Price one realistic trade, including the spread, commission, conversion and expected holding period.
- Check whether your preferred platform is available on that account.
- Read the margin and close-out rules for the instrument, not just the generic account page.
- Start with the smallest sensible amount and avoid using maximum leverage.
FAQ
Is IG safer than CMC Markets?
Neither brand should be labelled universally safer. Safety depends on the regulated legal entity, how client money is held, the protections available in your country and your client classification. For UK retail clients, check the FCA details, compensation eligibility and negative-balance rules before opening an account.
Is CMC Markets cheaper than IG?
It depends on the product and trading pattern. Compare the normal spread, overnight financing, share-dealing commission, minimum charges, currency conversion and any account fees. A broker with the narrower headline spread may still be more expensive for a position held overnight.
Which is better for beginners, IG or CMC Markets?
CMC Markets may feel more focused and easier to navigate, while IG offers more research and markets but can feel busier. Beginners should prioritise risk controls, clear costs and a demo account over the number of available instruments.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Availability varies by country, product and account type. Do not assume that a MetaTrader account is available simply because the broker’s wider group supports it. Check the platform list for your specific legal entity before applying.
Are IG and CMC Markets good for long-term investing?
Both may offer investment or share-dealing services in selected markets. For long-term investing, compare custody fees, dealing charges, foreign-exchange costs, dividend processing, available shares and tax wrappers. CFD and spread-betting accounts are not substitutes for owning investments.
Should I choose IG or CMC Markets for CFDs?
Choose IG if market range and research are your priorities. Choose CMC Markets if you prefer its charting and order interface. In either case, calculate the total holding cost and use leverage conservatively; CFDs are high-risk products.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: IG is the better all-round broker for many traders who want broad market access, substantial research and a mature multi-product offering. CMC Markets is the better specialist choice for traders who place more weight on charting, platform usability and active CFD or spread-betting tools. For UK share investing, compare the two current tariffs side by side rather than relying on the CFD reputation of either firm.
Open a demo with both, price the same hypothetical trade and verify the regulated entity serving you. That short test is more useful than choosing based on a headline spread or a generic “best broker” ranking.
