Disposable Medical Supplies: How to Choose and Use Them Safely

Choose disposable medical supplies for the task and exposure—not just because an item is labeled “medical.” Check its intended use, fit, material, packaging, and instructions. Most disposable personal protective equipment (PPE) is meant for one person and one use; medical gloves should never be washed, shared, or reused. Put used needles and other sharps into an FDA-cleared sharps container promptly, then follow local disposal rules.

What counts as a disposable medical supply?

The term covers products with different purposes, risks, and directions. This guide focuses on two groups addressed in U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumer guidance: PPE—such as medical gloves, gowns, masks, and respirators—and sharps used in home care. Their instructions are not interchangeable: a glove protects hands during certain tasks, while a needle or lancet is a device that must be handled and discarded to prevent punctures.

Disposable supplies can make care more convenient, but they do not replace hand hygiene or other infection-control practices. PPE works alongside measures such as washing hands and covering coughs and sneezes. Removal and disposal matter too, because contaminated PPE can expose the wearer or other people. See the FDA’s PPE overview and Q&A.

How to choose a supply for the task

Start with what the product is intended to do and what exposure is possible. PPE requirements and standards vary by product type, so do not assume that every item in a category offers the same protection. Compare products intended for the same task using the relevant criteria below.

MedPride Powder-Free Nitrile Exam Gloves, Iris Blue, Medium, Box/100
  • MEDICAL EXAMINATION GLOVES: Powder-free nitrile exam gloves made for medical examinations and patient care. Ideal for home caregivers, home health visits, wound care and personal medical use, as well as for physicians and nurses. Non-sterile, single use only.
  • LATEX FREE AND POWDER FREE: The ideal solution for individuals sensitive to natural rubber latex and donning powder. Nitrile is a synthetic material, so these gloves are not made with natural rubber latex and leave no powder residue on hands or skin.
  • TEXTURED FINGERTIPS FOR CONTROL: Comfortable fit with textured fingertips for excellent tactile sensitivity, so you keep a secure grip and a precise feel during exams, treatments and everyday patient care.
  • STRONG AND STRETCHY: Extraordinary strength, stretchable durability and puncture resistance with a premium iris blue color. The nitrile stretches to fit your hand comfortably during use.
  • BEADED CUFF, BOX OF 100: Features a smooth external finish and beaded cuff for extra durability. Each box holds 100 ambidextrous gloves that fit either hand, available in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large.
  • Intended use and exposure: Match the item to the task and the kind of contact or exposure it is intended to address.
  • Protection and applicable standards: Check the product’s labeling and any relevant performance level or standard; categories are not automatically equivalent.
  • Fit and material: For gloves, select a proper fit and a material compatible with the user’s needs and allergies.
  • Sterility and packaging, when applicable: If a supply must be sterile, follow its packaging and use instructions; do not treat sterility as a requirement for every disposable product.
  • Use, storage, and disposal instructions: Follow the product-specific label rather than generalizing from another item’s directions.

For the applicable product category, the FDA’s guidance on PPE, medical gloves, and masks and N95 respirators explains why intended use and labeling matter.

Using disposable PPE safely

Follow the single-use direction

The FDA says most PPE is designed for one use by one person; reusing it can make its protective capability uncertain. Its Q&A states: “Disposable PPE is designed to be used only one time and by one person; it cannot be washed.” Washing can change an item’s protective or barrier capabilities and make it ineffective. Some products, such as certain elastomeric respirators or protective eyewear, may be reused only when their labeling and decontamination instructions specifically allow it. That exception does not apply automatically to other disposable supplies. Follow the FDA’s PPE Q&A.

Use medical gloves for appropriate tasks

The FDA describes exam, surgical, and chemotherapy gloves as types of medical gloves. Gloves may be appropriate when hands could contact body fluids, certain hazardous drugs, or potentially contaminated items. They are disposable PPE, not a substitute for hand hygiene.

  • Choose a glove that fits and is labeled for the task.
  • Check the package for the glove material. People with a natural rubber latex allergy should choose a synthetic material such as PVC, nitrile, or polyurethane.
  • Change a torn glove, and clean hands after removing gloves.
  • Never wash, disinfect, reuse, or share medical gloves.

If a synthetic option is appropriate for the task, look for nitrile medical gloves with medical labeling. Material alone does not establish that a glove is suitable for every use. See the FDA’s medical-glove guidance.

Do not treat masks and respirators as interchangeable

A surgical mask is loose-fitting and does not filter or block very small airborne particles in the way a respirator is designed to do. Respirators are intended for respiratory protection and have distinct requirements. FDA-cleared N95 respirators are labeled as single-use, disposable devices. Choose according to current recommendations for the setting and task, and follow the product’s labeling. The FDA explains the distinction in its guidance on masks and N95 respirators.

How to dispose of needles and other sharps at home

Sharps are devices with points or edges that can puncture or cut skin. They include needles, syringes, lancets, auto-injectors, and infusion sets. Used sharps can injure people and pets and spread infections.

  2. Discard each used sharp promptly: Place it in the container rather than leaving it loose where someone could be injured.
  3. Follow local disposal arrangements: Collection options and applicable rules vary. Check local requirements and the container’s instructions for how to dispose of it when full.

Never put loose sharps in household or public trash or recycling, and do not flush them. The FDA’s consumer advice is not written for health care facilities, which may have different procedures. For home use, consult the FDA’s pages on safely using sharps and sharps disposal containers.

What to check before using a supply

Read the label and inspect the product in line with its instructions. For a sterile supply, packaging condition matters: do not use it if the sterile packaging is wet or damaged. That check applies to sterile products, not every disposable item. Follow the directions for the particular product, including any specified storage, use, and disposal steps.
