AirAsia Japan Co., Ltd. ceased operations effective October 5, 2020, and said all its flights had been cancelled. The closure concerned the Japanese subsidiary’s domestic and international services, not every AirAsia Group flight to Japan. A separate date in the company’s Japanese notice—December 5, 2020—was the planned date for discontinuing all routes.
What closed, and when?
AirAsia Japan Co., Ltd., incorporated in July 2014, operated domestic and international flights from Chubu Centrair International Airport. On October 5, 2020, it announced that it had decided to cease operations effective that day and that all flights were cancelled. The dates can be confusing because the company also said it had notified Japan’s transport ministry that all routes would be discontinued on December 5, 2020. The ministry confirmed that date the following day. The route-discontinuation date was not the date the company said operations stopped: flights ceased effective October 5, while December 5 was the stated date for formally discontinuing all routes. Why did AirAsia Japan close?
AirAsia attributed the decision to the pandemic’s continuing economic impact, international travel restrictions and uncertainty, and a sharp decline in business and leisure demand. It said flight reductions, cancellations and grounded aircraft had followed, and that successive, wide-ranging cost-cutting efforts were not enough to sustain operations without a clearer recovery outlook. These are the company’s stated reasons, not an independent finding about the closure’s causes. AirAsia’s announcement

AirAsia Japan Representative Director and COO Jun Aida said the company had concluded it would be “an extremely challenging feat” to continue operating without visibility and certainty about a post-pandemic recovery path. AirAsia Group’s 2021 annual general meeting minutes add that the parent group was also considering pandemic-era financial limitations and a refocus on core ASEAN markets. That is group-level context, rather than a separate explanation from the Japanese subsidiary. AirAsia Group 2021 AGM minutes

Did the closure affect every AirAsia flight to Japan?
No. The announcement concerned flights operated by AirAsia Japan under the code DJ. AirAsia said other AirAsia Group airlines’ Japan services were unaffected by the subsidiary’s closure. Its 2020 announcement also discussed some international services resuming after travel restrictions lifted; that was a plan stated at the time, not confirmation of present-day routes. AirAsia said affected guests would be contacted by email within seven days. On October 6, Japan’s transport minister said the ministry had received notice of the planned route discontinuation and would guide the company on refunds, passenger notices and support. Those statements establish what the company promised and what the ministry said it would oversee; they do not establish how any particular ticket or refund claim was ultimately resolved.
