Ambergris is a rare, waxy material associated with sperm whales that was once prized in perfumery for helping fragrance last. Today, synthetic ambergris-style alternatives are more common. Whether a natural find can be collected or sold depends on where you are: U.S. NOAA guidance prohibits collecting, keeping, or selling it, while Australian authorities tell finders to report it and check local rules.
What is ambergris?
Ambergris is a solid, waxy substance associated mainly with the digestive tract of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). NOAA Fisheries describes it as forming when secretions surround squid beaks and cuttlefish parts in the whale’s intestine. Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) also identifies pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) as a source. The exact formation process is not fully settled: an older NOAA publication noted that squid beaks are often found in ambergris but said it was unknown whether they initiate its formation.
Ambergris can float and wash ashore. Sun, air, and salt water can oxidize it, changing its color and odor over time. DCCEEW reports that ambergris occurs in about 1–5% of sperm whales and pygmy sperm whales; that is an Australian Government estimate for those species, not a universal prevalence measurement. DCCEEW’s ambergris guidance was last updated 3 January 2025.
Why was ambergris used in perfume?
Ambergris has historically been used as a perfume fixative: an ingredient that helps a fragrance last. The Natural History Museum explains that ambrein, an odourless alcohol extracted from ambergris, has been used for this purpose. Synthetic chemicals have replaced it in all but the most expensive perfumes, according to the museum; Smithsonian Ocean likewise says synthetic alternatives are more common today.

That history explains ambergris’s reputation, but it does not mean a modern perfume containing an ambergris-style note uses material from a whale. Check the product’s ingredient and sourcing statements rather than inferring its origin from a scent description.
Is ambergris ethical?
There is no single answer based only on whether the material was found naturally. Ambergris is associated with protected whale species, and a washed-up find still raises questions about wildlife-product rules, sourcing transparency, and demand. A fragrance maker’s clear disclosure can help you understand what it uses, but it does not establish that collection or trade is lawful where you live.

For a fragrance, a clearly labeled synthetic alternative avoids using whale-derived material. If you are considering handling, keeping, transporting, or trading a natural find, check with the relevant wildlife authority before doing so. Legal rules differ by country and can distinguish among activities and circumstances.
Can you collect or sell ambergris?
Do not assume that a beach find is free to keep or sell. The rules vary by jurisdiction, and the following examples are specific to the places named.

NOAA Fisheries says, “You may not collect, keep, or sell ambergris because it is a part from an endangered marine mammal.” Its general guidance on protected marine-mammal parts also notes that rules can depend on a part’s origin and the intended activity. Do not assume that exceptions for certain pre-Act or antique parts authorize collecting or selling ambergris. Consult NOAA’s protected marine species parts guidance for the agency’s rules.
Australia
DCCEEW treats ambergris as a whale product. The EPBC Act regulates possession and movement in the Commonwealth Marine Area; federal law controls import and export, and state and territory laws also regulate whale products. The department advises finders to report a find and check their state or territory rules before collecting or trading it. It also says commercial export permits for ambergris will not be granted. Read the Australian Government’s ambergris guidance and contact the relevant state or territory authority.

Rules vary internationally. The Natural History Museum discusses the treatment of naturally occurring ambergris under CITES, but that summary should not be read as blanket permission to collect, possess, sell, or move it within every country. Domestic laws may be stricter. Check with your local wildlife authority before handling or trading a find.

Synthetic ambergris-style ingredients and fragrances are the supported alternative category. Look for products described as “synthetic ambergris,” “ambergris-inspired,” or as using a synthetic substitute, and check the maker’s wording about ingredients and sourcing. These terms indicate an intended scent direction; they do not guarantee a chemically identical ingredient or the same scent profile as natural ambergris.

The Natural History Museum and Smithsonian Ocean both describe the shift to synthetic alternatives. The sources do not identify one universally used substitute molecule or establish particular brands as equivalent. There is also no dependable current market-price figure here for natural ambergris, so historical prices should not be treated as today’s value.
