John Schoettler, who oversaw Amazon’s global corporate real estate and facilities organization, announced on September 19, 2024, that he planned to retire at the end of that year after 23 years with the company. GeekWire reported that Amazon had expanded its office footprint from about 1 million square feet when he joined in 2001 to more than 65 million square feet across more than 60 countries by his planned departure. Those are reported estimates, not independently audited figures.
What was announced—and when
Schoettler made the announcement at a Puget Sound Business Journal event on September 19, 2024. GeekWire reported that his retirement was planned for the end of 2024, following 23 years at Amazon. The report did not give a personal reason for his decision.
How Amazon’s office footprint changed during his tenure
According to GeekWire’s September 2024 reporting, Amazon’s office space totaled about 1 million square feet when Schoettler joined in January 2001. By his planned departure, the company’s footprint had grown to more than 65 million square feet in more than 60 countries. These figures describe the scale of the expansion as reported by GeekWire; they should not be read as audited real-estate disclosures.

Headquarters and offices
Amazon’s staff profile describes Schoettler as vice president of Global Corporate Real Estate and Facilities and credits his team with overseeing construction of The Spheres in Seattle. It also says he was involved in the decision to build Amazon’s second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, and played a key role in constructing the company’s largest office building in Hyderabad, India. The profile also recounts his advocacy for two entrances at Seattle’s Van Vorst Building and operable windows at the South Lake Union campus; these examples come from Amazon’s own account of his work.

GeekWire reported in September 2024 that Shannon Loew had been named as Schoettler’s successor and had taken on day-to-day oversight in early 2024. In a May 2, 2025, report, GeekWire said Loew was leaving Amazon. The available reporting does not establish who currently leads Global Real Estate & Facilities, so Loew’s earlier appointment should not be treated as confirmation of the organization’s present leadership.
