Amazon’s community-impact work has combined grants and donations with housing investment, food delivery, education, disaster response, employee volunteering, and the company’s logistics and technology. Alice Shobe, a nonprofit-sector veteran, built the function after joining Amazon in 2017; she transitioned out of its leadership in 2025. Amazon’s June 2026 update names Bettina Stix as global director of Amazon Community Impact.
How Amazon’s community-impact effort developed
Alice Shobe joined Amazon in 2017 to build its community-impact function. Before Amazon, she led four Washington State nonprofits and worked in public, nonprofit, and philanthropic roles, according to her biography from the American Institute for Boys and Men: American Institute for Boys and Men biography.
In a 2023 GeekWire story about the initiative’s expansion, Shobe described the team’s growing public presence: “We’re out there. We’re visible and becoming more visible.” The article presented the effort as part of Amazon’s expanding civic footprint, with a technically oriented team using company capabilities to support community needs. It also described early uses of Amazon’s delivery infrastructure for emergency supplies, food access, and laptops during remote learning. Those are accounts of the program at that time, not a guarantee that every activity or team arrangement continues unchanged. GeekWire’s 2023 feature
Who leads Amazon’s community-impact work now?
Shobe announced her departure from the leadership role in 2025. In a June 2026 community update, Amazon identified Bettina Stix as global director of Amazon Community Impact. The 2023 title’s description of Shobe as a former nonprofit executive is historical; it should not be read as saying she currently leads Amazon’s program. What does Amazon’s community work include?
Amazon describes its efforts as a mix of financial support and practical contributions delivered with nonprofit and civic partners. The company points to logistics and delivery, technology, employee time, and partnerships alongside grants and donations. Its broad program areas include:
- Funding and donations: Grants and contributions to nonprofits, community groups, and schools.
- Housing and basic needs: Investment in affordable housing and support for food access.
- Education: Computer-science and STEM education and skills training.
- Disaster response: Using operational capacity to help move supplies during emergencies.
- Volunteering: Employees working with local organizations on community activities.
Amazon’s descriptions establish how the company says it participates; they do not, by themselves, establish independent assessment of the programs’ effectiveness or the company’s reported totals. Amazon Sustainability’s communities page

What Amazon reports about its community impact
Amazon’s 2025 Community Impact Report for the National Capital Region reports the following regional figures. The measures cover different activities and periods, so they should not be added together as one overall impact total.
| Measure | Amazon-reported figure | Scope and period |
|---|---|---|
| Donations | More than $60 million to 230-plus local partners | National Capital Region; the prior 12 months, as stated in Amazon’s 2025 report |
| Affordable housing | More than 10,000 homes created or preserved | National Capital Region; Amazon report figure |
| Meals | More than 1.5 million meals delivered to local organizations addressing hunger | National Capital Region during 2025 |
| Computer-science and STEM education | More than 700,000 hours of free education | Across the National Capital Region in 2025 |
These are company-reported claims in Amazon’s regional report, not independently audited figures established by the cited material. They describe one region and should not be presented as Amazon’s global totals. The report quotes Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer David Zapolsky saying, “This work is only possible through collaboration,” in a discussion that recognizes community partners and employees. Amazon’s global volunteering snapshot uses a different measure and geography from the National Capital Region report. The company says more than 134,000 employees took part in its 2025 Global Month of Volunteering, supporting more than 2,500 organizations across 55 countries. That count is a worldwide, time-bound volunteering statistic; it is not comparable to regional donations, meals, housing, or education hours. Amazon’s 2025 Global Month of Volunteering report
For historical context, Amazon said it donated more than $78 million to Washington, D.C.-area nonprofits, community groups, and schools in 2023, in a 2024 account of a Washington Business Journal recognition. That is a company statement about giving in the D.C. area for 2023—not a nationwide total or a substitute for the later report’s distinct 12-month measure. Amazon’s 2024 account of the recognition

What the figures can—and cannot—tell you
The reports show the range of ways Amazon says it supports communities, from money and housing investment to meals, education, logistics, and employee volunteering. They do not make unlike measures directly comparable: a dollar amount, a home created or preserved, a meal delivered, an education hour, and a volunteer count each describe a different output. When assessing a particular claim, check its geography, reporting period, unit, and whether it is company-reported or independently assessed.
