Amazon Japan is introducing adjustable self-adhesive paper packaging, a larger paper bag and smaller delivery labels, while using software to choose package types and reduce unused space. The changes are part of Amazon’s broader packaging-reduction effort, but the new-format details come from Japan and should not be mistaken for a global rollout announcement.
What is changing in Amazon Japan’s packaging?
Amazon Japan describes several changes to how orders are packed and labeled. The materials are designed to fit items more closely, simplify handling and use less packaging where possible.
Adjustable paper wrap that sticks to itself
The new paper material has adhesive areas that bond to one another, rather than to the item or a person’s hands. Tomoko Kanda, a senior manager in Amazon’s Package Customer Experience division, said in Japanese that the paper’s special self-adhesive technology “bonds strongly” when the adhesive areas meet, while not sticking to products or hands; this is an English translation of her statement. Amazon Japan’s feature says the flexible wrap can be adjusted around an item to reduce parcel volume and make packages easier for customers and delivery drivers to handle.
A larger paper bag
Amazon Japan also describes a larger paper bag inspired by rice sacks. It is intended to hold larger and heavier items than the company’s earlier paper bags. Amazon says the paper materials can be recycled as paper; local collection rules determine whether a particular item is accepted in a household recycling stream.

Smaller delivery labels
Some delivery labels have been reduced to less than half their previous size, according to the same feature. Amazon says it spent more than a year coordinating with delivery partners on system specifications, text and barcode placement, and legibility for drivers. The stated aim is to reduce label size without sacrificing the information drivers need.
How does Amazon choose the package for an order?
Amazon says its packaging-selection system uses product shapes and dimensions to work out how items can be arranged safely and efficiently. For an order containing multiple products, their orientation and how they are stacked can change which package fits.

The company says the selection process also takes account of Japan-specific delivery conditions, logistics-center structures, delivery records and customer feedback. Kanda describes the goal as balancing product protection and ease of handling with less unused space and packaging material. This is a description of Amazon’s approach, not evidence that every order will use the smallest possible package.
What do Amazon’s broader packaging figures show?
Amazon’s Japan packaging update sits within a wider company program, but the available figures cover different regions and measures. They are company-reported results, not independently verified measurements. The 2026 update says its figures reflect Amazon’s 2025 Sustainability Report.

| Shipments recyclable in household waste streams | 73%, up from 63% in 2024 | North America in 2025, reported by Amazon in 2026. |
The measures are not interchangeable: the North American plastic figures do not describe Japan, and the global figure for orders shipped without extra Amazon packaging is different from the household-recyclability rate. The results also show that Amazon reported some continued use of single-use plastic delivery packaging in North America alongside an increase in shipments it says are recyclable in household waste streams.

The Japan feature explains the intended functions of the new materials and system, but it does not provide a controlled comparison of packaging formats or a life-cycle assessment. A closer-fitting paper wrap may reduce parcel volume, but the sources do not establish that paper is environmentally preferable in every situation or quantify the impact of each Japan-specific change.
