Amazon Teamsters at two New York City facilities authorized a strike in December 2024. The vote preceded a multi-facility strike days later, but was not itself a walkout.

Amazon Teamsters at two New York City facilities voted to authorize a strike on December 13, 2024, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said. The vote gave the union authority to call a strike; it did not mean workers had already walked out. A multi-facility strike that included New York City followed on December 19, according to the Associated Press.

Which Amazon facilities were involved?

The Teamsters said the authorization covered workers at JFK8, Amazon’s fulfillment center on Staten Island, and DBK4, a delivery station in Queens. The union described the vote as “overwhelming,” but its announcement did not provide a facility-level vote count or percentage. The Teamsters’ December 13 announcement is the source for the facilities and the union’s account of the vote.

What did workers and the union want?

The union said workers wanted Amazon to recognize their union and negotiate a contract addressing wages and working conditions. It set December 15, 2024, as the deadline for Amazon to agree to bargaining dates. The Teamsters characterized conditions as dangerous; that is the union’s position, not an independently established finding in the available reporting.

Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien said in the union’s announcement: “Amazon is pushing its workers closer to the picket line by failing to show them the respect they have earned.”

How did Amazon respond?

Contemporaneous reporting by The Verge quoted Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards disputing that the Teamsters represented thousands of Amazon employees and drivers. Hards said, “They don’t, and this is another attempt to push a false narrative.” The union’s representation claims and Amazon’s response are the parties’ competing positions; neither should be treated as an adjudicated finding.

Did workers actually strike?

Yes. The authorization and the later walkout were separate events: on December 19, 2024, the Associated Press reported strike action at multiple Amazon facilities, including in New York City. That establishes that a broader strike followed the authorization, but it does not establish that every worker who voted at JFK8 or DBK4 took part. The AP report identifies New York City among the strike locations.

What has happened since the 2024 vote?

An open NLRB case in Maspeth

The National Labor Relations Board’s docket lists case 29-CB-391159 as open, with a charge filed July 20, 2026, concerning alleged picketing or strike actions in Maspeth, New York. The listing describes an allegation under Section 8(b)(1)(A); it is not a finding that misconduct occurred. The NLRB also notes that the docket listing may not reflect every action in the case. The case docket provides the listed procedural details.

Union-reported picket activity in Queens

In a release dated October 7, 2026, the Teamsters said they had extended picket lines to Amazon’s DBK1 facility in Woodside, Queens. The union said drivers there were joining hundreds who had organized with Local 804 the prior year. This is the union’s account of later activity, distinct from the December 2024 authorization at JFK8 and DBK4. The Teamsters’ October 7 release reports the extension.

What did the vote mean for Amazon deliveries?

The vote itself did not establish that deliveries would be delayed: it authorized a possible strike if the bargaining-date demand was not met. The December 19 action later included New York City, but the available reporting does not quantify delivery delays or establish a broad effect on customers. The authorization, the later strike, and any consumer impact should not be conflated.
