Amazon said the number of items it delivered the same day or overnight in the United States rose by more than 65% in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared with the same quarter in 2022. That is growth in the number of qualifying items—not a claim that any individual package arrived 65% faster.
What Amazon’s 65% delivery figure measures
The figure covers October through December 2023, compared with October through December 2022, and applies to the United States. Amazon described it as the increase in the number of items delivered “the same day or overnight.” It does not report the underlying item totals for both quarters in the cited accounts, so readers cannot use them to independently calculate the percentage. The Associated Press reported that Amazon declined to provide comparable 2022 shipping data. Amazon’s January 30, 2024 account and the AP report identify the company as the source of the claim; the cited materials do not establish that the underlying count was independently audited.
In practical terms, the metric says Amazon delivered a larger volume of items using those speeds. It does not say every customer received faster service, that every address had same-day or overnight options, or that a particular package’s transit time fell by a specific amount.
Why Amazon said more items arrived quickly
Doug Herrington, then CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, attributed the increase to three operational priorities: shortening travel distances, improving where inventory is placed, and expanding Same-Day Delivery. Amazon said it reorganized its U.S. operations and transportation networks into smaller regions, enabling it to ship nearly 600 million more items from in-region fulfillment centers year over year in Q4 2023. These are company-reported explanations and figures.

Regional networks and nearby inventory
Amazon said regionalization allowed it to rely more on inventory located closer to customers. Shorter routes can reduce the distance an item travels; the company also said the approach was intended to reduce the number of stops per package. The Q4 figure for additional in-region shipments refers to items shipped from those fulfillment centers, not the number of same-day or overnight deliveries.
Dedicated Same-Day sites
Amazon described its dedicated Same-Day sites as hybrid facilities combining fulfillment-center and delivery-station functions. Items can be fulfilled, sorted, and sent out for delivery from one location. The company said it added nine such sites in 2023, extending service to 18 additional U.S. cities, and had more than 55 sites in operation. Those figures describe Amazon’s network at the time of its January 2024 account; they do not establish current availability in a particular area.

How the 2023 claim compares with later figures
Amazon has published later delivery figures, but they use different periods or wording. They should not be read as a continuous series that directly measures the same thing as the Q4 2023 claim.
| Period and source | Amazon-reported figure | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2023, reported January 30, 2024 | More than 65% year-over-year growth in U.S. items delivered the same day or overnight. | A quarterly growth rate for “same day or overnight” items. |
| Full year 2023, reported January 30, 2024 | More than 7 billion items globally arrived the same or next day, including more than 4 billion in the U.S. | Annual item volumes, not the Q4 growth rate; the AP said Amazon did not provide a comparable 2022 total. |
| Year to date in June 2025, reported June 24, 2025 | U.S. same-or-next-day item counts were up more than 30% against the same period in 2024. | A year-to-date comparison, using “same or next day” wording. |
| Full year 2025, reported February 3, 2026 | More than 8 billion U.S. items arrived the same or next day, up more than 30% from 2024; Amazon reported more than 13 billion globally. It also reported a 70% year-over-year increase in items delivered in less than a day in 2025. | Full-year volumes and growth rates with “same or next day” and “less than a day” measures, not the Q4 2023 “same day or overnight” metric. |
The later figures come from Amazon announcements dated June 24, 2025 and February 3, 2026. They provide newer company-reported context, not independent verification of the 2023 claim.

What the figure means for shoppers
The reported growth describes Amazon’s delivery network at a national level, not a guarantee about a specific order. The speed options shown for an item can depend on the customer’s address, the item, and availability. For a purchase decision, use the delivery date displayed for the item and address at checkout rather than treating the 65% figure as a promise of faster delivery for every order.
