ABC’s decision to pull Taylor Frankie Paul’s filmed season of The Bachelorette exposed the network to an estimated $30 million in production and marketing costs, according to figures reported by Forbes. That is not a confirmed ABC or Disney loss: a broader estimate that includes potential lost advertising reaches upward of $60 million, but it, too, is a projection rather than a disclosed or audited result.
What happened to Taylor Frankie Paul’s season?
ABC canceled the season three days before its scheduled March 22, 2026 premiere. On March 19, Disney Entertainment Television said it would not move forward with the season “at this time,” following the release of 2023 video, and said its focus was supporting the family. The wording did not announce that the completed season had been permanently scrapped or would later air. ABC News reproduced the statement; the Associated Press reported the timing.

The decision followed publication of video of a 2023 altercation involving Paul and former partner Dakota Mortensen. Separately, ABC News reported an open Draper City police investigation involving allegations in both directions. The released video and the investigation are distinct matters; the existence of an investigation is not a finding that any allegation in it is true.
What does the $30 million estimate include?
Forbes, summarizing an estimate by The Hollywood Reporter, put production and marketing exposure at roughly $30 million. The reported production estimate was $20 million to $25 million, with several million more for marketing. Forbes said the production calculation assumed about $2 million per episode and a 10-to-13-episode season based on prior seasons, because ABC had not announced this season’s episode count. These are reported estimates, not figures ABC or Disney disclosed as its loss.

How much could canceling the season cost ABC?
Forbes reported that the potential cost could exceed $60 million when estimated lost advertising revenue is included. That larger figure combines different kinds of exposure: costs already incurred or estimated for production and marketing, and advertising revenue that the season might have generated. It should not be read as a confirmed net loss.
| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $20 million–$25 million | Estimated production cost | The Hollywood Reporter estimate as reported by Forbes in 2026; based on an assumed episode cost and a 10-to-13-episode range, not an announced episode count. Forbes |
| Roughly $30 million | Estimated production and marketing exposure | Reported estimate, not a confirmed final loss; includes several million dollars in marketing alongside the production estimate. Forbes |
| $20 million–$35 million | Estimated advertising revenue the season could have brought in | Guideline estimate reported by Forbes; it is potential revenue, not a booked or realized amount disclosed by ABC. Forbes |
| $30.7 million | Advertising spending for the previous season | iSpot figure reported by Forbes; this measures prior-season spending, not advertising revenue secured for Paul’s canceled season. Forbes |
| Upwards of $60 million | Potential combined exposure including production, marketing, and estimated lost advertising | Forbes’s broader estimate, not an ABC-confirmed or audited net loss. Forbes |
The distinction matters for personal-finance readers assessing the headline: production and marketing are costs, while advertising is possible revenue that may not materialize. The previous season’s ad spending is a benchmark, not proof of what advertisers had committed for this season. Without a public accounting of costs, ad commitments, replacement revenue, and any later use of the season, there is no verified figure for ABC’s realized net loss.

How could the replacement program change the bill?
Forbes reported ABC planned to fill the vacated Sunday slot with an American Idol rerun. A rerun can still carry advertising, so the canceled premiere did not necessarily mean the entire slot’s ad revenue disappeared. Forbes said ads were likely to sell for less than those around a Bachelorette premiere. The report also identified licensing fees to Warner Bros. Unscripted TV and replacement-programming costs as possible factors, but did not quantify them. Forbes

The available reporting through September 2026 did not establish a final ABC decision to release the season. On May 8, TheWrap reported the season was absent from ABC’s summer schedule. Walt Disney Television executive Rob Mills said the company was still processing events and taking things a day at a time; he did not promise an eventual broadcast. TheWrap

On September 3, The Daily Beast reported that Paul discussed a brief engagement from the unaired finale during a Hulu podcast preview. That report indicated the season remained unaired at that point, but did not establish that ABC had decided never to release it—or that it would eventually air. The Daily Beast
As of those reports, neither a definitive release decision nor a confirmed realized net loss had been reported. The season’s status and the financial outcome therefore remain unresolved, rather than settled by the $30 million headline.
