What began as 30 coins became a reported total of 35 after archaeologists recovered five more nearby. The coins include English silver groats and Scottish gold demys and half-demys; experts say the hoard may have been buried in the early to mid-1460s.
What coins were found near Cappercleuch?
Keith Young and Lisa Stephenson discovered the hoard while metal detecting near Cappercleuch. The initial 30 coins were followed by five more recovered nearby during a Treasure Trove Unit investigation, bringing the reported total to 35. The finders, rather than a museum excavation team, made the initial discovery.
The reported mix spans two kingdoms and several denominations:
| Issuing kingdom | Reported coins | Rulers associated with the coins |
|---|---|---|
| England | Silver groats | Henry V and Edward IV |
| Scotland | Gold demys and half-demys | James I and James II |
The reports identify the coin types and rulers, but do not provide individual weights, exact issue dates for every coin, or enough evidence to calculate what the coins could have bought at the time. Archaeology Magazine’s report and Live Science’s report describe the find and its reported contents.

When might the hoard have been buried?
Experts considered burial in the early to mid-1460s plausible. That is an interpretation, not a precise date established by the reporting: no exact burial year or detailed archaeological account of the hoard’s context has been published in the cited coverage. Calling it nearly 600 years old is a useful broad description, not a claim that its burial date is known exactly.
Why the find drew attention
The mix of English and Scottish coins is not, by itself, unusual for a hoard. Antony Lee, who leads Scotland’s Treasure Trove Unit, said: “Coin hoards containing a mix of both English and Scottish coins are not unusual, but we do not see many hoards from this period in Scotland, so it’s a fascinating find.”

For Lisa Stephenson, the discovery was “the find of a lifetime.” The significance described by Lee is the combination of the hoard’s period and its Scottish setting, rather than evidence that mixed English and Scottish coinage was unprecedented.
What happens to finds under Scotland’s Treasure Trove process?
Young and Stephenson reported their discovery to Scotland’s Treasure Trove Unit. The process can involve investigation, assessment, a decision about whether an object is claimed, and—if claimed—consideration of museum allocation and a recommended finder award.

- Report and investigate: The Treasure Trove Unit receives reports of discoveries and investigates and assesses objects.
- Consider a claim and allocation: If an object is claimed, the Scottish Archaeological Finds Allocation Panel (SAFAP) considers museum applications and recommends an ex gratia award level.
- Make the final decision: The King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer makes the final decision on valuation and allocation.
The Unit’s official information explains its role, and its SAFAP information describes the panel’s work. The cited reporting said the coins had not yet been valued at the time it was published. That does not establish their status in 2026: the available sources do not confirm a later claim, valuation, museum allocation, or finder award.

Scotland’s landowner guidance says an in-situ hoard can preserve archaeological information. Its general advice is to leave the objects where they are, cover them, record the location, and contact the Treasure Trove Unit or a local authority archaeologist. This is general guidance, not a description of what happened at Cappercleuch. See Information for Landowners for the official instructions.
