American Airlines announced an expansion of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID on December 12, 2025, ahead of the winter holiday travel period. The airline said the rollout would cover several hubs and gateways, including JFK, ORD, LAX, DCA, PHL, CLT and additional terminals at DFW. Touchless ID is an optional facial identity check for eligible AAdvantage members with TSA PreCheck—not a separate screening program, a guaranteed shortcut or a replacement for preparing your travel documents.
What American Airlines Touchless ID does
At a participating checkpoint, an opted-in traveler can have a live image matched against a photo previously supplied to the U.S. government, such as a passport, Global Entry or visa photo. American says eligible travelers may use a dedicated security lane without presenting a physical ID or mobile boarding pass there. The process is voluntary and supplements TSA PreCheck.
American’s 2025 holiday announcement forecast that more than 12 million customers would travel on more than 119,000 flights during the holiday season. Those were the airline’s forecasts, not independently audited outcomes, and do not measure Touchless ID use or time saved. The sources available do not establish an average number of minutes saved or independent customer praise; the announcement itself does not identify who “applauded” the rollout.
Who can enroll and what you need
Touchless ID requires TSA PreCheck, an AAdvantage account and an opt-in. American’s May 2025 launch announcement set a minimum age of 18 and required an AAdvantage number, valid passport information and a Known Traveler Number (KTN). American’s current guidance says to save the KTN and passport details in the Secure traveler section of the AAdvantage profile, verify that the name, date of birth and passport number match the passport, and then opt in. Enrollment renews annually, according to American’s launch announcement.

TSA PreCheck is distinct from Touchless ID. A TSA PreCheck applicant receives a KTN; eligible CBP Trusted Traveler participants use a PASS ID. Save the applicable number in the AAdvantage profile or reservation. If you add a KTN after checking in, American says you need a new boarding pass for the PreCheck indicator to appear.
How to set up Touchless ID on American
- Get TSA PreCheck or confirm your eligible Trusted Traveler status. You need a KTN or, for eligible CBP Trusted Traveler participants, a PASS ID. American’s TSA PreCheck information explains how the number is used for travel.
- Open your AAdvantage profile. Go to the Secure traveler section and enter your KTN or PASS ID and passport information.
- Check your details against your passport. American instructs travelers to ensure their name, date of birth and passport number match.
- Opt in to TSA PreCheck Touchless ID. Participation is voluntary. Follow the current profile instructions and confirm your enrollment before travel.
- Check your trip and airport before departure. Touchless ID is only available at participating checkpoints, and the airline’s airport coverage can change. Follow airport signs and staff directions; use the regular process if a Touchless ID lane is unavailable.
Which airports have it, and how the rollout changed
The airport list depends on the date. American’s December 12, 2025 holiday announcement named JFK, ORD, LAX, DCA, PHL and CLT, along with additional terminals at DFW. In an April 22, 2026 update, American said Touchless ID was available at all of its hubs and at more than 60 U.S. airports where it operates. That later footprint should not be read back into the specific 2025 holiday announcement.

Availability is checkpoint-specific, so an airport’s inclusion does not establish that every security checkpoint there has the feature. Check American’s current TSA PreCheck and Touchless ID guidance and airport instructions for your departure.
American reported on April 27, 2026, that more than 2 million customers had opted in. This is the airline’s cumulative figure as of that update, not an independently verified count.

What Touchless ID changes—and what it does not
| Option | Eligibility and availability | Enrollment or setup | At the checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular TSA screening | Available subject to airport screening procedures. | No Touchless ID enrollment. Follow TSA and airline instructions. | Use the standard screening process and present required identification and travel documents. |
| TSA PreCheck | For travelers approved for the separate TSA expedited-screening program. | Obtain a KTN, or use a PASS ID if eligible through CBP Trusted Traveler programs, and associate it with the reservation. | PreCheck screening benefits depend on the traveler’s boarding-pass indicator and checkpoint availability. |
| TSA PreCheck Touchless ID | Eligible AAdvantage members with TSA PreCheck; only at participating Touchless ID checkpoints. | Save matching traveler and passport details in the AAdvantage profile and opt in. | At a participating dedicated lane, an opted-in traveler may use facial identity verification instead of presenting a physical ID or mobile boarding pass there. |
Touchless ID does not guarantee a shorter queue or a specific time saving. Keep required identification and travel information available, and follow TSA and airport instructions if you cannot use the dedicated lane.
Cost and the optional card benefit
Touchless ID is a service, not a product purchase. A co-branded credit card is not required to use it. American says eligible Citi / AAdvantage Executive Mastercard cardholders can receive up to $120 in application-fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck every four years when the fee is charged to the card. That is a separate, conditional card benefit; consult the issuer’s current terms before applying or relying on it.
