Reuters reported in October 2025 that Amazon was considering as many as 30,000 corporate job cuts. Amazon later announced approximately 14,000 affected roles in October 2025 and approximately 16,000 additional affected roles in January 2026—about 30,000 announced roles across those two rounds, not a confirmed count of completed departures. The latest company announcements covered here are from January 2026; they do not establish whether Amazon made further changes after that.
What does “up to 30,000” mean?
The figure first appeared as a reported potential target, not as an Amazon-confirmed one-time layoff announcement. On October 27, 2025, Reuters said Amazon was targeting as many as 30,000 corporate job cuts, citing three people familiar with the matter. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment at the time. Reuters reported the potential target.
The distinction matters: a reported target is not the same as a company announcement, and announced affected roles are not proof that the same number of employees ultimately left.
What Amazon announced afterward
| When | Figure | What it represents | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 28, 2025 | Approximately 14,000 roles | Amazon’s announced corporate workforce reduction. | Amazon statement by Beth Galetti |
| January 2026 | Approximately 16,000 additional affected roles | Amazon said some teams had not completed this work in October. | Amazon organization update by Beth Galetti |
| October 2025 and January 2026 combined | Approximately 30,000 roles | The Associated Press described the two announced rounds as totaling about 30,000 roles. | Associated Press recap |
The two company-announced rounds broadly align with the earlier reported maximum, but they are different kinds of claims. The figures refer to roles or affected roles; the sources do not establish a final count of completed separations.

Why did Amazon say it was reducing roles?
Amazon described the changes as an effort to reduce organizational layers and bureaucracy, increase ownership, and shift resources toward strategic priorities. In October, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of People Experience and Technology, also said AI was enabling companies to innovate faster. That was Amazon’s explanation of the technology’s significance, not evidence that AI alone caused every role reduction. Galetti’s October statement.
In January, Galetti said Amazon would continue hiring in strategic areas and that broad reductions every few months were not the company’s plan: “That’s not our plan.” The comment addressed whether Amazon expected to announce broad reductions every few months; it is a statement of the company’s position at that time, not a guarantee about later events. What support did Amazon describe for affected employees?
Amazon’s stated arrangements were qualified by “most” and by local requirements, so they should not be read as identical guarantees for every employee or country.
- October 2025: Amazon said most affected employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role, with timing varying under local laws. For employees who could not find a role or chose not to seek one, Amazon listed severance, outplacement services, health benefits, and more.
- January 2026: Amazon said most US-based affected employees would have 90 days to seek an internal role. International timing would vary according to local and country-level requirements. The company again described severance, outplacement services, and health benefits, as applicable.
These are company descriptions of support, not a substitute for an employee’s location-specific notice or benefits information.

Is 30,000 the final or current total?
It is accurate to describe approximately 30,000 roles as the combined total associated with Amazon’s October 2025 and January 2026 announcements. The available announcements do not establish whether the company later revised that figure, announced additional cuts, or how many affected employees ultimately departed. Because the latest cited company update is from January 2026, the number should not be presented as a confirmed final total for October 2026.
