In March 2022, Amazon said it had converted 5,000 square meters of warehouse space in Slovakia into a humanitarian aid hub for people displaced by the war in Ukraine. The company said teams established it in 10 days and described it as the largest such hub Amazon had built. It was one part of a regional response—not a claim that it was the largest humanitarian facility run by any organization—and the announcement does not establish whether the hub operates today.
What the Slovakia hub did
Amazon repurposed warehouse space previously used for customer fulfillment, drawing on its European logistics network to organize relief supplies. The company said its process was to assess refugees’ needs, donate or procure missing items, consolidate and pack supplies, then ship them to charities for distribution.
Amazon reported that its network was preparing and delivering more than four million supplies donated by the company and its customers. The items included shelter materials, hygiene products, blankets, and clothing. That figure was a network-wide company report, not a count of goods handled solely by the Slovakia warehouse.
The hub was intended to support distribution in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Moldova, and the Czech Republic. At launch, Amazon named Save the Children and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as distribution partners. It also said customers in Europe could contribute through dedicated Amazon Wish Lists; those were donation channels reported at the time, not evidence of a current campaign.

How the Slovakia and Poland hubs compared
Amazon announced a second regional hub near Sosnowiec in southern Poland on March 31, 2022. The company described both sites as part of its effort to consolidate and ship aid through charities, but its announcements did not provide comparable throughput or independently measured impact data.
| Hub | Reported warehouse area | Announced role | Relationship to regional response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slovakia | 5,000 square meters, according to Amazon’s 2022 launch announcement | Consolidate, pack, and ship relief supplies through charities | Intended to support distribution in six Central and Eastern European countries |
| Poland, near Sosnowiec | 3,500 square meters, according to Amazon’s 2022 announcement | Consolidate, pack, and ship supplies for charity distribution | Amazon said the facility nearly doubled the warehouse space dedicated to obtaining first-need products |
The Poland announcement also described local support, including donations to Polish organizations, employee volunteering, blankets, meals, and Ukrainian-language children’s books. These details describe the broader response, not the Slovakia hub’s activities.
Other Amazon support was separate from the hubs
Amazon’s April 22, 2022 update put combined financial, product, and cloud-credit donations at more than $35 million. It specified more than $10 million donated to over 150 charities and $15 million in AWS cloud credits. A later Amazon retrospective reported more than $45 million in support and more than two million aid items. These are company-reported totals from different reporting periods and descriptions, so they should not be added together or treated as independently audited figures.
A separate operation sent more than 30,000 medical supplies from Amazon’s Atlanta disaster relief hub to Ukrainian hospitals in partnership with International Medical Corps. The shipment included first-aid kits, face shields, surgical gowns, thermometers, towels, tents, water filters, cots, and portable handwashing stations; it was not handled by the Slovakia hub.

Amazon also described a U.S. resettlement effort with Welcome.US, offering families scheduled delivery of household essentials such as mattresses, bed frames, kitchenware, and toiletries. The company said it committed $2 million in product donations to that program. It was distinct from the Central European hubs.

“Largest” was Amazon’s launch-era description of the Slovakia hub as the largest such hub it had built. It does not establish a ranking across humanitarian organizations, nor does it show that the warehouse remains a relief hub today. The launch announcement and subsequent updates cited here do not confirm its current operating status.
