Eligibility depends on the items and how they are fulfilled, and Amazon estimates five to eight days for qualifying non-Prime orders.
What “back to $35” means
On February 21, 2017, GeekWire reported that Amazon had returned its non-Prime free-shipping minimum to $35 after raising it to $49 the year before. GeekWire said Amazon had quietly updated its support page. The report linked the move to competition from Walmart, but that context does not establish Amazon’s internal reason for changing the threshold. GeekWire’s February 21, 2017 report
The phrase “free shipping minimum back to $35/order for non-Prime members” describes that 2017 change. Amazon’s current U.S. free-delivery explainer also lists a $35 minimum, but its current guidance is not evidence of a newly announced reduction.
What Amazon’s current U.S. guidance says
Amazon’s U.S. explainer, published March 11, 2025, says non-Prime customers can get free delivery by spending at least $35 per order. Amazon says qualifying orders can take five to eight days to arrive. Check item eligibility before relying on the threshold
The $35 total is not a blanket guarantee for everything in an Amazon cart. Amazon advises customers to check the product detail page to confirm an item qualifies and is fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. A third-party seller’s item, an ineligible product, or a different delivery option may not meet the conditions for this free-delivery offer.
- Open the item’s product detail page and look for free-delivery eligibility messaging.
- Confirm the item is fulfilled and shipped by Amazon, as Amazon’s guidance specifies.
- Review the order’s delivery estimate and shipping charge in your cart or at checkout before placing the order.
Does the $35 threshold vary by location?
There is a historical reason to check your own cart rather than assume the threshold is identical everywhere. In August 2023, TechCrunch reported that Amazon confirmed a test in which non-Prime free-shipping minimums were set at $35 in some ZIP-code-grouped regions, compared with $25 elsewhere; customers in the same region were to see the same threshold. That test does not prove Amazon still varies thresholds by ZIP code. Amazon’s current U.S. explainer states $35 but does not settle whether regional variation continues. If your order shows a different minimum, follow the current terms displayed for your location and cart.
How non-Prime free delivery compares with Prime
Amazon’s March 11, 2025 U.S. explainer lists Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. The comparison below is limited to the terms stated on that page; it does not determine which option costs less for an individual shopper.

The published figures do not establish a universal Prime break-even point. Whether membership makes sense depends on your own eligible orders and use of Prime, rather than the $35 threshold alone.

GeekWire’s 2017 report quoted the then-current support page as offering free shipping when an order included at least $35 of eligible items or $25 of books, with other eligible items in that order also shipping free. That is historical wording, not evidence of Amazon’s current book-order policy. For a present order, use the current product page and checkout terms rather than relying on the old book exception.
