What happened in Houston?
InsideEVs reported on July 4, 2024, that three Rivian Amazon electric delivery vans caught fire at an Amazon fulfillment center in Houston. The report said drone footage was captured July 1 and that no one was injured. Amazon thanked the Houston Fire Department for its response.
According to the report, the vans were plugged into chargers. Rivian said the vehicle in question was not charging when the incident occurred and that its high-voltage battery did not initiate the fire. The report also said chargers connected to a damaged circuit panel board were turned off while Amazon electrical engineers and a high-voltage specialist assessed the other chargers. InsideEVs’ report is secondary reporting, not a published final fire-investigation determination.
Did Houston’s summer heat cause the van fire?
The available reporting does not establish heat as the cause. It also does not identify a final ignition source. Rivian’s statement that the high-voltage battery was not the initiator is an attributed company statement, not an independent investigation finding. The fact that the incident occurred during summer does not by itself show that heat triggered it.

What Amazon says about heat safety
Amazon’s general heat-safety practices provide context about delivery work, but they do not explain this particular fire. In an article written by Sarah Rhoads, Amazon’s vice president of Global Workplace Health & Safety, and updated June 25, 2026, Amazon says its branded delivery vehicles are air-conditioned and vehicles with nonfunctioning air conditioning are taken out of service. It also describes driver cooling and hydration resources, weather alerts, and route adjustments. Amazon’s heat-safety article presents company descriptions and figures, not independent evaluations or incident statistics.
- Amazon says it has invested more than $100 million in van heat-mitigation retrofits.
- It says reflective roof film has been installed on nearly 9,000 vehicles, with expansion planned to more than 15,000 by the end of 2026.
- Amazon says it reduced routes by more than 114 million minutes in the prior year to provide additional rest time.
Those figures are Amazon’s own, as reported in its 2026 update; they are not evidence about what caused the Houston fire.

The reporting available here establishes that three vans caught fire, that no injuries were reported, and that Rivian said the high-voltage battery was not the initiator. It does not establish the final ignition source or connect the event to Houston’s summer heat. Amazon’s response, quoted by InsideEVs, was: “We’re grateful no one was injured and are thankful for the Houston Fire Department’s rapid response.”
