He is Dubai’s ruler and the UAE’s vice-president and prime minister. Independent reporting has also described extensive British property holdings linked to him and close family, while making clear that the precise ownership picture is uncertain.
Who is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum?
Born in 1949, Sheikh Mohammed grew up in Dubai’s Al Shindagha district. Dubai’s official biography says he became head of Dubai Police and Public Security in 1968 and was appointed UAE minister of defence in 1971. He became Crown Prince of Dubai in 1995, ruler on 4 January 2006, vice-president on 5 January 2006 and prime minister on 11 February 2006. Dubai’s official leadership biography records these roles and dates.
His public profile includes interests beyond government. Dubai’s biography describes early interests in falconry and horse riding, while the UAE Government Media Office characterizes him as a poet and equestrian, as well as a prominent horse owner and breeder. The Media Office profile also notes that he established Godolphin in 1994 with his brother Sheikh Maktoum.
Why horses are central to his public profile
Sheikh Mohammed’s involvement in racing dates back decades. Godolphin’s founder biography says he attended his first race meeting at Newmarket in May 1967. The filly Hatta gave him his first success as an owner at Brighton on 20 June 1977, then won the G3 Molecomb Stakes the following month. Godolphin describes the racing operation as an expression of his lifelong passion for horses and racing. Godolphin’s founder biography is the organization’s own account of that history.
#1 Best Overall
Godolphin grew into an international thoroughbred racing operation, making it important to distinguish the scale of the organization from Sheikh Mohammed’s personal lifestyle. The Guardian reported that published figures put his horseracing investment at more than £600 million between 2011 and 2020. That is a historical, period-specific figure reported in 2021—not an annual budget or a current estimate of personal spending. The same investigation described gallops, pools and equine spas at Moulton Paddocks and Godolphin Stables; those are facilities associated with racing operations, not proof that he personally owns or uses each amenity. The Guardian’s investigation provides the reporting and context.
What is known about his poetry?
Poetry is another documented part of his public life. Dubai’s official leadership page says he began composing Nabati poetry during his school years, inspired by his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The same page says his English-language collection Poems from the Desert achieved bestseller status. That public record establishes a literary interest, but it does not offer a window into his private finances or daily routine. Dubai’s leadership page includes the biographical account.

What has been reported about British property?
A 14 April 2021 investigation by The Guardian, compiled with Transparency International and based on Land Registry records and company filings, said British land and property apparently linked to Sheikh Mohammed and close family exceeded 40,000 hectares—more than 100,000 acres. The report described properties around Newmarket, homes in London and extensive land in Scotland. It also emphasized that the exact scale was unclear, in part because properties were held through companies.
The investigation cited historical transactions including the reported £75 million purchase of the Longcross estate in Surrey in 1976 and a £61.5 million 2018 purchase of Rutland House by a Jersey-registered company whose beneficial owner had not then been disclosed. These are figures and ownership findings from the 2021 reporting, not current valuations or proof that either property is his present-day residence.

Sheikh Mohammed’s lawyer declined to confirm property or company details, describing his financial affairs as private and confidential. The lawyer also disputed aspects of the reporting, denying that properties owned by Sheikh Mohammed had been purchased by offshore companies or structured to avoid UK taxes. The findings therefore should not be read as a confirmed register of his personal assets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the public record does—and does not—show
The strongest documented picture is of a head of state with a long-standing, substantial involvement in horse racing, alongside public interests in poetry and equestrian sport. The property investigation provides a notable account of holdings apparently connected to him and close family, but it does not establish a definitive personal inventory.
- The available sources do not establish a reliable current personal net worth.
- They do not provide an exhaustive list of homes, personal possessions or present-day ownership status for every property named in the 2021 report.
- They do not substantiate claims about personal aircraft, yachts, cars, watches, jewelry or which palaces he uses.
- They do not provide a verified personal luxury-spending total.
For a personal-finance reader, the distinction matters: organizational investment, family-linked property and personal consumption are different categories. The documented evidence supports a portrait of influential public roles and large-scale equestrian interests, not a complete account of private wealth or day-to-day luxury.
