The Tata aviation story spans nearly a century, but it is not a list of airlines all still operating independently. JRD Tata founded Tata Airlines in 1932; Air India was nationalised in 1956 and returned to Tata ownership in 2022. Later Tata Group ventures included Vistara and AirAsia India, both of which were absorbed into the Air India Group in 2024.
Which airlines have been connected to the Tata family?
“Tata family” is often used informally, but the ownership history is more precise when described in terms of JRD Tata, Tata Sons and the Tata Group. JRD Tata founded the original airline; later investments, joint ventures and mergers were corporate actions by Tata Sons or the group.
| Airline or brand | Tata connection | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Airlines / Air India | Founded by JRD Tata in 1932; the airline was later named Air India. | Nationalised in 1956; returned to Tata ownership in January 2022. |
| Vistara | Established in 2013 as a 51:49 joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. | Merged with Air India on 12 November 2024. |
| AirAsia India / AIX Connect | A Tata Group joint venture with AirAsia Berhad; later renamed AIX Connect. | Merged into Air India Express on 1 October 2024. |
Tata Group’s travel and tourism business overview and heritage timeline document the founding and later ventures. The 2024 changes mean Vistara and AirAsia India are historical brands in this account, not separate current airlines.
How did Tata Airlines become Air India?
JRD Tata’s aviation venture
JRD Tata founded Tata Airlines in 1932, beginning the group’s airline history decades before India’s independence. Tata Group’s account says the airline was later christened Air India. The connection between the Tatas and Air India therefore predates the airline’s later return to private ownership.

Nationalisation and the 2022 return
Air India was nationalised in 1956. In January 2022, Air India and Air India Express returned to the Tata Group after 69 years as government-owned enterprises, according to Tata Group’s handover announcement. The 2022 event was a return after nationalisation, not the beginning of Tata involvement in aviation.
What happened to Vistara?
Vistara began in 2013 as a joint venture in which Tata Sons held 51% and Singapore Airlines held 49%. It was not solely Tata-owned. On 12 November 2024, Vistara merged with Air India.

Singapore Airlines said it would hold a 25.1% stake in Air India following the merger, rather than own all of Vistara or Air India. India’s competition regulator approved the proposed merger and related shareholding subject to commitments. See Tata Group’s merger announcement, Singapore Airlines’ announcement and the Competition Commission of India for the transaction context.
Is AirAsia India still operating?
Not as a separate airline under that name. Tata Group’s AirAsia India joint venture was renamed AIX Connect and merged into Air India Express on 1 October 2024. The original AirAsia India brand and the later AIX Connect business are part of that predecessor history; the surviving airline is Air India Express.

Which Tata-linked airlines remain after the 2024 mergers?
The consolidation produced two airline businesses in the Air India Group: Air India as the full-service airline, and Air India Express as the low-cost airline, as described in Tata Group’s merger announcement.
| Surviving airline | Role stated by Tata Group | Brands merged into it in 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Air India | Full-service airline | Vistara |
| Air India Express | Low-cost airline | AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India |
This structure distinguishes the present airline group from the historic names it incorporates: Tata Airlines, Vistara and AirAsia India are important parts of the story, but the 2024 mergers left Air India and Air India Express as the two operating airline identities identified in Tata Group’s announcement.
