Alkimos College’s Stage 2 expansion officially opened in November 2024. The $29.29 million figure in the January 2022 headline described an early proposal—not the project’s later reported cost. Subsequent WA Government reporting put Stage 2 at $52.2 million and said construction was completed in October 2024.
Why the $29.29 million figure changed
On 13 January 2022, PerthNow reported that the Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel had unanimously approved a proposed second stage at Alkimos College, with an estimated value of $29.29 million. That was a planning-stage figure attached to the proposal then being reported; it should not be read as the final cost of the delivered work. PerthNow’s January 2022 report described three two-storey buildings and planned refurbishments.
When construction began, the WA Government described Stage 2 as a $52 million development. The 2024–25 WA Budget and the Government’s November 2024 opening announcement later reported a $52.2 million Stage 2 project. The Government also said the completed Alkimos College project, including earlier work, totalled approximately $100 million. These figures refer to different reporting points and descriptions, rather than a single unchanged estimate. The November 2022 construction announcement and the November 2024 opening announcement provide the later figures.
| Reporting point | Reported amount | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| January 2022 | $29.29 million | Planning-stage proposed second stage, as reported by PerthNow. |
| November 2022 | $52 million | Stage 2 development announced when construction began by the WA Government. |
| 2024–25 Budget and November 2024 opening coverage | $52.2 million | Stage 2 project amount in WA Government reporting. |
| November 2024 | Approximately $100 million | Total Alkimos College project after Stage 2 opened, according to the WA Government. |
What the expansion includes
The 2022 proposal described three two-storey buildings: an arts block and two learning blocks. It also included changes to existing rooms. Later Government descriptions detail the completed project as a broader mix of teaching, student-support and performance spaces.

This molecular model kit will help teachers and parents to cultivate children's interest in chemistry. Let intangible chemical molecules atomic shape transform into tangible. Better to understand and kinds will find it helpful in studying molecular geometry. A great hands-on way to learn!
- ★ POWERFUL FUNCTIONS --- This model contains C, H, O, N, P, S, F, CL, BR, I and other metals and a variety of single and double bonds, long bonds, long keys. Can be put high school, university chemistry in most of the organic or inorganic molecular structure model for the study of experimental operation.
- ★ WHAT YOU GET --- Swpeet brings you this terrific 240-piece molecular model set! Each molecular model kit comes with 86 atom pieces made up of 12 different elements. Also included are 153 links: long flexible ones (good for double and triple bonds), medium-length hard links, and two types of shorter space-filling links. Easily separate atoms from the links with the included removing tool.
- ★ NON-HAZARDOUS MATERIAL --- All models of the factory are made of food grade green plastic, new plastic, atomic ball (PP plastic, music buckle cup plastic) link key (LDPE plastic) box (ABS plastic)
- ★ CONVENIENT STORAGE --- The pieces come in a slim plastic box for convenient storage. See the pictures on this listing for a full understanding of what's inside!
New learning and specialist spaces
- The arts facilities include performing arts, dance and visual arts spaces, with dedicated music and specialist classrooms also named in the Government’s construction announcement.
- Later official descriptions identify arts, English and mathematics learning areas, additional general learning classrooms and STEM classrooms.
- The project includes student services and an auditorium; the Government’s 2022 announcement referred to a performing arts centre.
- The English block includes a classroom and homeroom for the college’s Specialised Autism Learning Program, according to the Government’s opening announcement.
Refurbishments and access
PerthNow’s January 2022 account said the proposal would convert two drama rooms into a teaching café and food technology facility, two visual arts studios into a STEM lab and building and construction workshop, and the media room into a mechatronics lab. It also reported plans for 135 additional car parking bays and 50 bike racks. Those details describe the proposal reported at that time; the later opening announcement does not confirm each item individually.
The 2024–25 WA Budget describes minor refurbishments to Stage 1 facilities alongside the new two-storey buildings. Its project summary lists arts, English and mathematics learning areas, student services and an auditorium. The 2024–25 WA Budget Statements provide that description.

When Stage 2 opened
The WA Government announced that Stage 2 construction had begun on 4 November 2022 and then anticipated the facilities would be ready for 2024. PerthNow’s January 2022 report had likewise forecast readiness for the start of the 2024 school year. Those were forecasts, not confirmation that the project was already open.
In its 13 November 2024 announcement, the Government said construction by EMCO Building had been completed in October 2024 and Stage 2 had officially opened in November. The announcement credited T&Z Architects with the architectural design.

What the figures do—and do not—say about capacity
PerthNow reported in January 2022 that the proposed facilities were expected to accommodate a further 750 students. That is a planning-era forecast from the proposal, not a verified final capacity figure. The later Government announcements cited here describe the facilities and opening but do not establish a confirmed student-capacity increase. The 750 figure should therefore not be presented as the expansion’s proven or current enrolment capacity.

The January 2022 report said another classroom block was expected in a third stage. The WA Government announcements and budget information cited above establish the Stage 2 scope and completion, but do not establish whether Stage 3 was later approved or announced. It is not possible on these sources to describe a third stage as a current confirmed plan.
