Airline Pilot vs. Commercial Pilot: What’s the Difference?

In the U.S. FAA system, “commercial pilot” names a certificate, while “airline pilot” describes a job. See how privileges, ATP qualifications, hours, medical standards and training differ.

This article uses U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) terminology. A commercial pilot is a certificate category; an airline pilot is someone working in an airline flying role. A commercial certificate allows certain operations for compensation and hire, but it does not by itself qualify someone for an airline job or authorize every paid passenger flight.

What’s the difference between an airline pilot and a commercial pilot?

Term What it describes What it means in the U.S. FAA system
Commercial pilot A pilot certificate Allows certain operations for compensation and hire, subject to the certificate’s privileges and applicable operating rules. It does not grant blanket authority to sell passenger flights.
Airline pilot A job or operating role Describes work for an airline. The role may require an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, ratings, medical qualification, employer qualifications, and the operator’s required authority.

The categories are not mutually exclusive: an airline pilot holds certificates, while “airline pilot” describes employment. A commercial certificate can be one step toward airline work, but it is not equivalent to being qualified or hired by an airline.

Can a commercial pilot fly for an airline?

A commercial certificate alone does not establish that a pilot meets an airline’s requirements. The FAA says an ATP certificate is required to fly as captain in some air transport operations. ATP qualifications and restricted-privileges ATP pathways also matter for airline work; the applicable requirements depend on the pilot’s role and eligibility.

There is a separate operational-authority question. The pilot’s certificate and the operator’s authority are distinct. FAA guidance explains that many operations carrying people or property for compensation require the operator to hold authority under Part 119, unless an exception applies. A commercial certificate alone therefore does not authorize someone to run an airline or charter operation.

How do flight-hour requirements compare?

The FAA’s commercial-certificate FAQ gives 250 total hours as an example minimum for that certificate. The FAA says airlines may set experience minimums such as 1,000 or 2,000 hours or more. Those airline figures are examples of employer standards, not one universal airline threshold. Certification minimums and hiring requirements answer different questions.

Requirement What the FAA source says How to interpret it
Commercial certificate 250 total hours as an example minimum, according to the FAA; year not stated on the page. A certification figure, not a guarantee of airline eligibility or employment.
Airline experience Airlines may require 1,000 or 2,000 hours or more, according to the FAA; year not stated on the page. Examples of airline-set hiring standards. Requirements vary by carrier and can change.

Hours are not the only hiring consideration. The FAA notes that airlines may value types of flight experience differently and may consider whether an applicant has a college degree. There is no single hiring threshold or guaranteed timeline established by these FAA figures.

What does an ATP certificate change?

An ATP certificate is relevant to airline work, particularly for pilots serving as captains in operations where the FAA requires it. The FAA also describes restricted-privileges ATP pathways. Some graduates of qualifying authorized higher-education programs may be eligible for an ATP with restricted privileges at fewer than 1,500 hours, allowing them to serve as copilots until reaching the applicable 1,500-hour threshold.

This is not a rule that every airline pilot needs exactly 1,500 hours in every circumstance. The restricted pathway is limited to eligible pilots who meet the requirements for a qualifying program and certificate. Confirm the current criteria with the FAA and the relevant employer.

What medical certificate does each pilot need?

FAA guidance maps ATP duties to a first-class medical certificate and commercial pilot duties to a second-class medical certificate. The relevant class depends on the privileges the pilot is exercising, not just the title someone uses. Pilots should check the FAA’s current medical guidance and discuss personal eligibility with an Aviation Medical Examiner.

How does pilot training differ?

Training may take place under Part 61 or at an FAA-certificated Part 141 school. Part 141 schools use structured programs and syllabi and may offer courses for commercial, ATP, and other certificates. The training framework and school are not the same thing as an airline job or a guarantee of meeting a particular carrier’s hiring standards.

Which path fits the kind of flying you want to do?

Start with the intended operation, not just the job title. A commercial certificate is relevant to certain paid flying within its privileges, while airline employment brings additional qualifications and employer standards. Before paying for training or making a career plan, identify the certificates, ratings, medical qualification, experience, and operator authority relevant to the role you want; check current FAA rules and the hiring requirements of specific carriers.
