Engine availability—not a lack of orders—is constraining Airbus’s aircraft ramp-up. Airbus has identified significant shortages of Pratt & Whitney engines for its A320 family, while the engine maker is also supporting in-service engines that need recall-related work and maintenance. Airbus’s latest confirmed delivery outlook in the sources available here is its July 29, 2026 update: around 870 commercial aircraft deliveries targeted for 2026, conditional on avoiding further disruptions. That is management guidance, not a guaranteed result.
What Airbus has disclosed about the shortage
At its February 19, 2026 FY2025 results, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said the production ramp-up was being managed amid “significant Pratt & Whitney engine shortages.” Airbus said Pratt & Whitney had not committed to the number of A320-family engines ordered, negatively affecting Airbus’s 2026 guidance and the family’s production trajectory. Airbus delivered 793 commercial aircraft in 2025, up from 766 in 2024. Airbus’s FY2025 results
The shortage matters because a completed aircraft needs its engines as well as its airframe. If engines arrive later or in lower numbers than planned, Airbus cannot convert all of its production capacity and orders into completed deliveries on schedule. The disclosed bottleneck is therefore supply and throughput, not insufficient customer demand.
What the latest delivery figures and targets mean
In its July 29, 2026 H1 results, Airbus reported 351 commercial aircraft deliveries in the first half of the year and a commercial-aircraft backlog of 9,222 at June 30. Deliveries are aircraft completed and handed over; backlog is unfulfilled orders. The two figures describe different things and should not be read as interchangeable measures of production or sales. Airbus retained its target of around 870 commercial-aircraft deliveries for 2026. The company said the target assumed no additional disruptions to the supply chain, internal operations, or its ability to deliver. It is a forecast, not the final 2026 result. The company also retained its target of producing 70–75 A320-family aircraft per month by the end of 2027, then stabilizing at rate 75.
Why engine production and maintenance compete for capacity
Faury described Pratt & Whitney’s challenge as serving new-aircraft production while also supporting the in-service GTF fleet. He pointed to a recall campaign linked to a metal-powder issue, relatively low durability of the current engine version, shortages of certain parts, and limited maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capacity. In his account, parts and MRO resources were not sufficient to meet both new-engine and retrofit needs fully, contributing to aircraft-on-ground cases. These are Airbus management’s explanation of the pressures, not an independent root-cause investigation. Airbus’s 2026 annual press conference

- Every gear, shaft, and joint is built for motion—an engineered engine flow you can set in motion with your own hands.
- Rotate the crank to drive linked parts in different directions and speeds, achieving a rare dual-direction, single-axis effect.
- A semi-exposed design lets you watch the mechanics at work, with metallic painted parts adding an authentic, engineered look.
- A hands-on challenge, leading to an engine you can see and operate—every gear and motion built by you.
- A build that engages both mind and hands, making this engine a memorable gift for any mechanical enthusiast.
The mechanism creates a two-sided constraint: new engines are needed to complete aircraft for Airbus customers, while existing engines need parts and shop visits to return aircraft to service. When either stream falls behind, the industry has fewer engines available for aircraft operations or deliveries.
The wider single-aisle maintenance problem
IATA and Emerton described similar aftermarket pressures across the single-aisle fleet, including durability issues, shortages of spare parts, limited spare-engine availability, and restricted access to aftermarket services. Their June 24, 2026 release said GTF-powered aircraft awaiting shop visits, spare engines, or parts peaked at 648 in March 2025—28% of the GTF fleet at that time. That is a historical peak, not a count of aircraft grounded in October 2026. IATA and Emerton’s findings

IATA said airlines responded by retaining older aircraft, extending leases, adding leased aircraft, and adjusting capacity. Those actions illustrate how engine-maintenance constraints can affect airline operations beyond the aircraft manufacturer’s delivery schedule. They do not establish a current number of grounded aircraft.
How the engine constraint fits Airbus’s other production targets
Airbus has announced different production-rate aims across its aircraft programs. The company explicitly connected the A320-family trajectory to Pratt & Whitney engine commitments; its other targets should not be treated as consequences of that same shortage.

| Program | Airbus target | Target timing | Connection to disclosed engine constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| A320 family | 70–75 aircraft per month; then rate 75 | 70–75 by the end of 2027; rate 75 thereafter | Airbus directly linked the revised trajectory to Pratt & Whitney engine commitments. |
| A220 | 13 aircraft per month | 2028 | Airbus says ramp-up continues; the target was not framed as a consequence of the A320 engine shortage. |
| A330 | Rate 5 | 2029 | A separate program target; no connection to this specific engine constraint was established. |
| A350 | Rate 12 | 2028 | A separate program target; no connection to this specific engine constraint was established. |
These are production-rate aims, not delivered-aircraft counts. They indicate Airbus’s planned manufacturing pace at particular dates; they do not establish that the company has already reached those rates.

The July 29, 2026 H1 results are the latest confirmed primary disclosure in the sources available for this article that revises or restates Airbus’s delivery outlook. Airbus’s orders-and-deliveries page listed aircraft-related announcements dated October 2 and 7, 2026, but the opened page did not include an update to the engine-supply outlook. That does not prove no later statement exists elsewhere, so the July guidance should not be presented as confirmed current performance. Airbus orders and deliveries
