Airbus completed its acquisition of selected Spirit AeroSystems operations on 8 December 2025, after regulatory approvals. The deal did not transfer Spirit AeroSystems as a whole: it covered specified manufacturing sites and work packages serving Airbus commercial aircraft. The earlier “good progress” wording came from a June 2024 report about negotiations, not a direct Airbus statement.
What happened to the proposed Airbus–Spirit deal?
On 20 June 2024, Reuters, in a report republished by Inc., said Airbus was making “good progress” in talks for Spirit’s Airbus-related assets. The account attributed that assessment to an unnamed person familiar with the talks. It was not a quote from a named Airbus spokesperson: Reuters report republished by Inc.
Airbus announced a definitive agreement on 28 April 2025. It initially expected the transaction to close in the third quarter of that year, subject to regulatory and customary approvals; Airbus later moved its expected timing to the fourth quarter while approvals were pending. The transaction closed on 8 December 2025. Airbus’s completion announcement and subsequent financial reporting confirm the completed transfer.
Which Spirit AeroSystems assets did Airbus acquire?
The final deal covered selected operations dedicated to Airbus commercial aircraft programs, not the entire supplier. Airbus’s completion announcement identified these sites and work packages:

The Belfast mid-fuselage operation had been conditional in the April 2025 agreement on Spirit not finding a suitable buyer for that part of the site. Airbus’s later reporting and closing announcement confirm that it was included in the completed acquisition.
What were the financial and workforce figures?
Airbus said it received $439 million from Spirit under the agreement, subject to typical purchase-price adjustments and customary post-closing review, as well as certain amounts to settle liabilities under the purchase agreements. The figure is transaction compensation reported by Airbus, not the price Airbus paid to buy all of Spirit AeroSystems.

Airbus also said it welcomed over 4,000 new colleagues. That is the employee figure in the company’s closing announcement, not a separately verified headcount. Airbus’s FY 2025 results reported a €188 million adjustment related to the acquisition and integration of certain Spirit work packages, including €100 million in the fourth quarter of 2025. Its H1 2026 results reported a €123 million integration-related adjustment, including €91 million in the second quarter. These are company financial-reporting adjustments, not measures of production output or the transaction’s purchase price.
Has the acquisition improved aircraft supply or production?
Airbus said the acquisition was intended to support supply stability for its commercial aircraft programs and provide a more sustainable operational and financial approach for the work packages. That describes the company’s rationale, not a measured result. Airbus has not published an independent statistic in the cited reporting that isolates the acquisition’s effect on aircraft deliveries, supplier reliability, or production throughput.

Integration was still underway in 2026. At its February 2026 annual press conference, Airbus discussed integration and ramp-up; CEO Guillaume Faury said integration of Spirit work packages was one factor pacing the A220 ramp-up and that Airbus was making tactical production adjustments. In its 29 July 2026 H1 results, Airbus continued to describe integration as ongoing and retained a target of 13 A220 aircraft per month in 2028. That target is a company plan, not evidence that the acquisition alone will determine output.

Airbus framed the transaction as a way to bring critical work for its own commercial aircraft programs into its industrial operations and support supply stability. In the closing announcement, Florent Massou, Airbus Executive Vice President Operations for Commercial Aircraft, said the company was proud to welcome the new colleagues and called the activities “of critical importance” to its commercial aircraft programs. This is Airbus’s characterization of the deal, rather than an independent assessment of its impact.
