The Active Network agreed to acquire ReserveAmerica from IAC on January 23, 2009; IAC later reported that the sale closed on January 31. The transaction transferred all of Reserve America Holdings, Ltd.’s capital stock to Active in exchange for approximately 3.5 million Active convertible preferred shares, valued by IAC at $33.3 million.

When did Active Network acquire ReserveAmerica?

IAC and The Active Network announced the agreement on January 23, 2009, and said they expected to close later that month. IAC’s 2009 annual report records the sale as completed on January 31, 2009. The announcement and closing were therefore separate dates, just eight days apart. IAC and Active’s announcement gives the agreement date; IAC’s annual report documents completion.

What did IAC receive in the sale?

IAC transferred 100% of the capital stock in Reserve America Holdings, Ltd. to Active. The announced consideration was approximately 3.5 million shares of Active convertible preferred stock—not a stated cash payment. IAC later reported that the shares were valued at $33.3 million. The announcement also said IAC would own approximately 9% of Active, including equity it had acquired previously. These figures describe the 2009 transaction, not a current valuation of ReserveAmerica or Active.

What did ReserveAmerica add to Active?

ReserveAmerica combined a consumer booking marketplace with services and technology for campground operators. Campers could use its reservation systems to find and book outdoor destinations; public agencies and private operators could use related tools and support to manage reservations and facilities.

  • For campers: a marketplace for reservable outdoor destinations and campsite bookings.
  • For operators: reservation systems, dedicated call-center services, database-management tools, local campground-management software, and marketing services.

Active’s 2009 announcement described ReserveAmerica as serving government and private operators. It reported more than 4 million transactions per year, contact with 17 million consumers annually, and service to more than 4,000 parks and resorts. Those are company-reported figures from the time of the deal, not current operating metrics. The same release gives conflicting campsite totals—over 300,000 in its main text and more than 350,000 in its company description—and does not reconcile them, so neither should be treated as a definitive count.

Why did IAC sell, and why did Active buy?

The companies presented the transaction as a strategic fit, but their statements describe their aims rather than independently verified results. IAC said the sale would help it streamline its portfolio and focus on core internet brands. Its CFO, Thomas McInerney, called Active “a more natural fit for the business.” Active said the acquisition would strengthen its position in outdoor recreation and improve technology and services available to public agencies.

Active president Matt Landa said at the time: “With the acquisition of ReserveAmerica, The Active Network has significantly strengthened its position as the technology leader in the outdoor recreation market.”

What happened to ReserveAmerica after the acquisition?

ACTIVE’s company history lists the ReserveAmerica acquisition in 2009 and says ACTIVE was acquired by Vista Equity Partners in 2013. In a 2017 release, ACTIVE described ReserveAmerica.com as its North American outdoor-recreation marketplace and announced an expansion of its private-campground offering, allowing users to search and book public and private facilities.

That 2017 release reported more than 17 million annual unique visitors to ReserveAmerica.com in the prior year, which ACTIVE said represented 42% of campers in America. It also cited nearly 290,000 campsite listings in its app. These are dated company-reported figures, not present-day traffic or inventory counts. The available company sources do not establish ReserveAmerica’s exact corporate ownership in 2026.
