On January 13, 2026, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) urged Spirit Airlines’ bondholders to honor funding commitments and provide the money it said the airline still needed to emerge from Chapter 11 as a going concern. Spirit did not emerge as an operating airline: the company announced an orderly wind-down effective May 2, 2026.
Why did ALPA ask Spirit bondholders for funding?
ALPA’s open letter framed the choice as honoring commitments and allowing Spirit’s restructuring to proceed, or withholding funding and risking liquidation. The union identified Citadel, a Miami-based firm, as one of the principal bondholders with significant influence in the restructuring. Its request was advocacy, not a court order or a guarantee that financing would be provided.
ALPA argued that liquidation would cost jobs, harm South Florida’s economy, and reduce competition and affordability in air travel. Those were the union’s stated concerns, not findings by a court. The letter also said Spirit pilots and flight attendants had contributed $100 million in concessions; ALPA’s statement is the source of that figure.
The letter was signed by Jason Ambrosi, ALPA International president, and Ryan P. Muller, chairman of the Spirit Airlines ALPA Master Executive Council. It said: “It requires honoring commitments made in bankruptcy court and providing the remaining funding necessary for Spirit Airlines to emerge as a going concern.”

What had Spirit’s pilots agreed to?
In a December 11, 2025 release, ALPA said pilots ratified contract modifications intended to support Spirit’s restructuring. The union reported that 82% voted in favor, with 78.95% of eligible pilots participating, and said the agreement secured a $278 million unsecured bankruptcy claim for pilots. These are figures reported by ALPA, not independently audited figures.
ALPA’s April 23, 2026 statement supported a proposed federal relief effort as support for the restructuring. It described Spirit as having 14,000 workers, including nearly 2,000 pilots; those were union figures published before the shutdown, not a current staffing count. The statement and the January appeal reflected the union’s effort to keep the restructuring and airline operating, not the eventual outcome.

Did Spirit Airlines emerge from bankruptcy?
No. Spirit Aviation Holdings announced that Spirit began an orderly wind-down effective May 2, 2026. The company said a March agreement with bondholders would have allowed the airline to emerge as a go-forward business, but Spirit did not continue as an operating airline. ALPA later described the airline as having ceased operations while bankruptcy and wind-down processes continued.
The January appeal therefore did not produce an emergence from Chapter 11 as a continuing airline. The available company and union statements do not fully explain why the March plan failed, and they do not establish final creditor recoveries or the complete court-supervised distribution of assets. Those questions require additional reporting or court records; ALPA’s appeal alone does not establish the reasons or creditor priorities.
