There is no verified public inventory of every royal handbag, but the best-documented choices show three distinct stories: Queen Elizabeth II’s long association with Launer alongside earlier makers, Catherine, Princess of Wales’s varied designer mix, and the named models linked to Diana, Princess of Wales. The evidence ranges from Royal Collection Trust records to fashion reporting, so the examples below are documented associations—not a complete list of anyone’s personal belongings.
What handbags did Queen Elizabeth II carry?
Queen Elizabeth II’s public handbag was both a recognizable part of her appearance and a personally selected accessory. Royal Collection Trust says she chose her own handbag and gloves to complete an outfit and was rarely seen at official engagements without them. Its account describes a long relationship with Launer London: the company supplied her handmade handbags for more than 50 years and received a Royal Warrant in 1968. Launer is a signature association, not the whole history. The Royal Collection Trust exhibition guide says the Queen carried handbags in many colors over her lifetime. Surviving examples include bags by British firm Bagcraft from the 1940s and 1950s, before Rayne and Launer appear in the story. The familiar image of a black or white top-handle bag therefore captures a recognizable public look, not the full range preserved in the record. The exhibition guide gives further detail.
Royal Collection Trust’s centenary collaboration with Launer includes a black Traviata and a green Judi, both with tartan linings. These are collaboration designs, not necessarily the same bags as those in the Queen’s personal collection. How large is the Queen’s handbag collection?
No reliable total for the Queen’s handbags is established in the sources cited here. Royal Collection Trust says her wider fashion archive spans 1926–2022 and contains over 4,000 items; that is the count for the fashion archive as a whole, not a handbag tally. Viral or frequently repeated handbag counts should not be treated as verified without a primary source.

What handbags are associated with Diana, Princess of Wales?
British Vogue links Diana to several named designs. Its account says the Dior bag now known as the Lady Dior was called the Chouchou when Diana received one in 1995; Dior renamed it Lady Dior in 1996. Vogue also identifies Salvatore Ferragamo’s Lady Di, Tod’s D bag and the Lana Marks Princess Diana bag. It reports that Ferragamo’s name reflected recognition of Diana’s affinity for the bag, and that Diana commissioned the Lana Marks design.
