How to Lodge a BAS in Australia: A Step-by-Step Guide

To lodge a BAS in Australia, check the statement and its due date, gather and reconcile records for the labels shown, complete the applicable fields, lodge online or through a registered tax or BAS agent, and pay using the statement’s payment details. Your BAS may cover different obligations from another business’s, so follow the fields and deadline on your own statement.

What a BAS covers

A business activity statement (BAS) is used to report and pay business tax obligations. Depending on your business and the statement issued to you, it may include GST, PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments or other obligations. You do not necessarily report every type of obligation on every BAS. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) describes BAS purposes and lodgment options in its business activity statement overview.

How do I lodge a BAS in Australia?

  1. Identify the statement and period. Use the BAS issued to your business. Note the reporting period, the obligations and labels it contains, and the due date and payment reference shown on it.
  2. Gather records for the relevant labels. Depending on what appears on the statement, you may need sales and purchase records, GST information, payroll and PAYG withholding records, or information relevant to PAYG instalments. Use records for the period specified by the statement.
  3. Reconcile the amounts. Check that the figures you intend to report agree with your business records and supporting documents. Resolve discrepancies before entering figures; do not assume a label applies if it is not relevant to your statement.
  4. Complete the applicable fields. Report the amounts for the obligations and labels that apply to your business. The ATO’s general guidance supports online lodgment but does not establish a reliable current, click-by-click screen sequence; use the instructions in the online service or ask a registered agent if you are unsure.
  5. Lodge by the statement’s due date. Most businesses that lodge their own BAS do so online, and a registered tax or BAS agent can also assist. Keep a record of the lodged statement and any confirmation.
  6. Pay using the statement’s payment details. Pay by the deadline shown on your BAS. Use the payment reference required for your chosen method and retain proof of payment.

When is my BAS due?

The date printed on your BAS is the date to follow. Standard dates are useful for planning, but the statement-specific date takes precedence because arrangements or concessions can affect it. The ATO’s BAS lodgment and payment due-date guidance gives these general patterns:

  • Monthly activity statements: generally due on the 21st day of the following month.
  • Quarterly GST reporting: standard dates are 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July, for the respective reporting quarters.
  • Weekend or public holiday: when a due date falls on a weekend or public holiday, the ATO says lodgment and payment are due the next business day.

For GST reporting, the ATO generally applies quarterly reporting when GST turnover is under $20 million and it has not required monthly reporting. Monthly reporting applies at $20 million or more, or if the business elects to report monthly. Some businesses voluntarily registered for GST may report annually if turnover is under $75,000, or under $150,000 for not-for-profit bodies. These are ATO criteria, not a substitute for checking the period and due date on your own statement.

Can I lodge my BAS online, or should I use an agent?

Both self-lodgment online and help from a registered tax or BAS agent are recognised routes. Choose based on the complexity of your obligations and your confidence in preparing the relevant labels; an agent may be useful when you need professional help interpreting or checking them. The applicable deadline still needs to be confirmed against your statement and ATO guidance. An agent does not automatically mean you have extra time. Service costs vary and are not specified here.

The ATO says BPAY and credit card through online services are among the quickest payment options. Card fees may apply, and most payment options require a unique payment reference number. Check the available methods and instructions for your statement before paying.

What if I can’t lodge or pay my BAS on time?

If you cannot lodge or pay in full by the due date, contact the ATO before the deadline. Do not assume an extension is automatic. Online lodgers and agent clients may be eligible for extra time in some circumstances, but eligibility and the applicable date must be confirmed against current ATO guidance and your statement. If you can pay only part of the amount, contact the ATO before the due date to discuss your situation rather than silently missing the deadline.
