Airbus and Boeing both have substantial operations in India, but neither company’s presence is captured by a single market-share figure or factory count. Airbus combines engineering, procurement, customer support, supplier contracts and the C295 military-aircraft programme. Boeing has offices, engineering centres, defence work and Indian suppliers, plus a Hyderabad joint venture that makes aerostructures—not complete commercial aircraft. Their airline orders show the scale of commercial relationships, but orders should not be mistaken for deliveries or aircraft already in service.
What does Airbus do in India?
Airbus describes its Indian work as spanning engineering and innovation, digital services, customer support, procurement and manufacturing partnerships. In March 2026, the company announced a new technology centre in Bengaluru intended to serve as a hub for engineering, digital transformation, customer services and procurement.
Airbus said more than 100 Indian companies supplied components and that its annual sourcing from India had grown from US$500 million in 2019 to more than US$1.5 billion at the time of the 2026 announcement. These are Airbus-reported figures, not independently audited comparisons with Boeing’s supplier or sourcing totals.
Commercial aircraft suppliers
Indian companies contribute parts and assemblies to Airbus programmes. In January 2024, Airbus named Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Mahindra Aerospace Structures Private Limited as suppliers of metallic detail parts, components and assemblies for the A320neo, A330neo and A350. In November 2023, it announced contracts with Aequs, Dynamatic, Gardner and Mahindra Aerospace for airframe and wing parts across those aircraft families.

Airbus framed this work as part of developing local aerospace capabilities. Rémi Maillard, then President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, said: “Our ambition is not only to support the growth of the Indian commercial fleet but also to grow the complete aerospace ecosystem here – and that includes developing and strengthening manufacturing and engineering capabilities from our Indian partners.”
Airbus’s reported domestic-market share
Airbus’s India overview page, retrieved in 2026, says its aircraft account for about 72% of India’s domestic commercial aviation market. This is a company-reported figure; the captured information does not specify its measurement date or denominator. The available evidence does not provide a matching Boeing figure calculated on the same basis, so it cannot support a like-for-like market-share comparison.
What does Boeing do in India?
Boeing’s India profile spans commercial aviation, defence, engineering, support and manufacturing partnerships. The company places its national headquarters and Boeing Defence India in New Delhi; Boeing Commercial Airplanes India and its Global Support Center in Gurugram; and the Boeing India Engineering & Technology Center in Bengaluru and Chennai.

Hyderabad joint venture and supplier work
Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited, Boeing’s joint venture with Tata Advanced Systems in Hyderabad, makes AH-64 Apache fuselages and other aerostructures for global customers, as well as vertical fins for the 737 programme, according to Boeing. Indian suppliers also provide components for commercial and defence programmes including the 737, 777, 787, AH-64, CH-47 and P-8. These are contributions to global supply chains, not evidence that Boeing assembles complete commercial aircraft in India.

Boeing’s India-page snapshots retrieved in 2026 give different totals: one reports more than 300 supplier partners and annual India sourcing above US$1.25 billion; another reports more than 375 suppliers and sourcing above US$1.4 billion. The snapshots do not provide consistent dates and methods for a reliable trend. Their figures should not be directly compared with Airbus’s sourcing numbers, which have different stated dates and may use different definitions.
Where are Airbus aircraft or components made in India?
Airbus–Tata C295 programme
The most visible aircraft assembly programme is the C295 military transport aircraft for India. The 56-aircraft programme was intended to replace the Indian Air Force’s AVRO fleet. Under the announced arrangement, 16 aircraft were to be delivered in fly-away condition from Seville, Spain, and the other 40 manufactured and assembled in India with Tata Advanced Systems.

Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems inaugurated the final assembly line in Vadodara in October 2024. Airbus described the programme’s planned Indian industrial scope as follows:
- 13,000 detail parts to be manufactured in India.
- More than 85% of the structural and final assembly work for the 40 India-produced aircraft to take place in India.
- 21 certified special processes and 37 India-based suppliers.
- A Main Component Assembly facility in Hyderabad, in addition to the Vadodara final assembly line.
These are announced scope and programme milestones. The available information does not establish the latest aircraft production or delivery status, so the inauguration of the line should not be read as confirmation that the 40 locally produced aircraft have been completed or delivered.

Boeing’s local manufacturing is focused on aerostructures
Boeing’s Hyderabad joint venture produces structures for aircraft programmes that serve global customers. The work is significant industrial participation, but it differs from Airbus’s announced C295 arrangement, which includes final assembly of 40 military aircraft in India.

What do Air India’s orders reveal?
Air India announced in June 2023 that it had signed purchase agreements for 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. The airline described the fleet expansion programme as worth US$70 billion at list prices. That announcement demonstrates a large commercial relationship with both manufacturers; it does not mean all 470 aircraft had been delivered or entered service.
In January 2026, Boeing and Air India announced 30 additional 737 MAX aircraft: 20 737-8s and 10 737-10s. Boeing said the purchases exercised existing options. Air India said the additions brought its firm Boeing order total to 250 and that it had received 52 aircraft from the original 220 ordered in 2023. These are figures reported in the companies’ dated announcements, not a current count of Air India’s Boeing fleet.

What the figures can—and cannot—show
The company profiles and announcements document substantial local activity, but they measure different things: office functions, supplier counts, annual sourcing, factory scope, market share and orders. Airbus’s 72% domestic-market claim has no matching Boeing statistic in the available evidence. The supplier and sourcing snapshots also lack aligned dates and methods. Neither set of figures supports a single, independent ranking of the companies’ overall presence in India.
For an airline or government procurement decision, an order announcement is a commitment or exercise of purchase rights; a delivery is a later event. For assessing local industrial participation, distinguish work performed in India—such as C295 final assembly or Boeing aerostructure production—from aircraft assembled elsewhere that contain India-sourced parts.
