Who Earns the Most at Each EFL Championship Club? Why a 2026/27 Ranking Can’t Be Verified

Third-party salary lists do not establish a consistent, current 2026/27 ranking of the top-paid player at every Championship club.

There is no reliable, current-season source in the available evidence for ranking the highest-paid player at all 24 EFL Championship clubs from least to most. Salary websites publish estimates, but the available lists do not consistently match the 2026/27 division or establish what each reported wage includes. Treating those figures as a definitive ranking would be misleading.

Why an all-24 ranking is not reliable

The Championship has 24 clubs, and its membership changes each season. For 2026/27, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City moved up to the Premier League; Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United replaced them after relegation, according to the 2026/27 season report.

Salary Sport says it ranks one top earner for each of 24 clubs, but its list includes teams that do not match that current division, including Sheffield United, West Ham United, Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, Bolton Wanderers and Lincoln City. It therefore cannot support a current Championship ranking. Its reported £165,000 weekly wage for Sheffield United’s Kalvin Phillips and £15,000 for Portsmouth’s John Swift are examples of figures on that page, not verified endpoints for the 2026/27 Championship.

SalaryLeaks labels its database 2026/27 and names West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen as its highest-paid player at £150,000 a week. But the page has inconsistent club counts, wage-bill totals and team listings, so it does not validate the top earner at every current Championship club. FootyStats labels its page 2026/27, yet says the salary data was last verified for 2025/26; its reported annual salary of €6,786,000 for Leicester City’s Harry Winks is not evidence of a current-season ranking.

These are third-party estimates or compiled reports, not a complete official record of individual player wages. A season label alone does not establish that a salary figure is current.

What a player’s “wage” can mean

The EFL’s 2025/26 regulations define “Basic Wage” as a player’s minimum guaranteed weekly pay before bonuses or other contingency payments. A list that does not explain its wage definition may be mixing base pay with broader compensation.

Loan arrangements add another complication: a reported salary may refer to the player’s full wage or only the portion paid by the current club. Without a consistent definition and clear treatment of shared loan costs, figures from different sources are not directly comparable.

What would make a ranking useful?

A defensible least-to-most list would need to identify, for each club, the named player, reported weekly wage, annual equivalent, source and verification date. It should use one currency and one season, define whether figures are guaranteed base wages or include other compensation, and disclose whether loan wages are shared. Missing or tied values should be marked clearly rather than filled in with assumptions.

The available sources do not establish those details for all 24 clubs in 2026/27. Until a consistent, club-by-club dataset is available, there is no responsible way to say which Championship club’s top earner is paid least or most.
