What happened in the Air Canada case
In a report published March 20, 2026, AOL, citing CTV News, identified the traveler as Ontario resident Brandon Bowman, who had booked a three-week trip to Thailand. He noticed that his middle and last names appeared together without a space. He says an Air Canada employee initially told him the minor formatting issue should not be a problem. A later employee told him the booking had to be canceled and rebooked.
Bowman told CTV that the replacement ticket had jumped in price by about $6,000. AOL reported the original fare as $4,958 and the replacement as $11,200. The financial outcome matters: after reviewing the initial call, Air Canada said the customer should have been advised more clearly about his options and that it had refunded the fare difference. Does a name typo mean you have to rebook?
Not necessarily. Air Canada’s agent-facing Name Correction Policy search result describes corrections for eligible 014 tickets, including misspelled first or last names and names that need to match legal travel documents after a legal name change related to marital status or gender change. It says a middle-name correction is not required. A missing space between a middle and last name is not, by itself, evidence that the passenger’s identity changed—but the incident does not prove that every formatting discrepancy can be ignored at the airport.
The policy result describes complimentary correction channels for itineraries made up only of flights marketed and operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, and Air Canada Express: direct-booking customers are directed to the Contact Centre, while GDS bookings have a separate procedure that includes an OSI notation and a correction request within three business days of departure. What to do if you find an error on an Air Canada ticket
- Compare the confirmation with your travel documents. Check the passenger name, itinerary, and travel dates against your passport and other relevant documents. - Ask which correction process applies to your exact ticket. Confirm whether it is an eligible Air Canada 014 ticket, whether any partner-airline segments affect the procedure, and what steps apply to your booking channel and departure timing. Ask whether the airline can correct the record without canceling the ticket, and what the proposed alternative would cost before authorizing cancellation or rebooking.
- Keep a record of the answer. Save the confirmation and any written responses. For calls, note the date, time, the guidance you received, and any case or reference number. If a second employee gives conflicting advice, calmly explain what you were told and ask for the available options to be reviewed before a fare-changing action is taken.
What if airline employees give conflicting advice?
Do not rely on an informal assurance that a discrepancy will be accepted, and do not assume that cancellation is the only solution because one employee says so. Ask the employee to explain the correction options for your ticket and itinerary, whether the name can be amended while preserving the existing booking, and whether canceling would expose you to the current fare. If the answer remains unclear, request a supervisor or a written response before agreeing to rebook, where timing permits.

What Air Canada said about the incident
An Air Canada spokesperson, as quoted by CTV News and reproduced by AOL, said: “Passengers should always check the booking confirmation immediately after they purchase a ticket to be sure all information is correct, including the itinerary, travel dates, and name spellings.” The spokesperson also said the customer “should have been advised more clearly about his options during the initial call” and that the airline had refunded the difference.
