For Christmas 2026, AAA says U.S. airport travel is generally busiest two to five days before the holiday—December 20–23—but that is a seasonal pattern, not a TSA forecast or a guarantee for any airport. As of October 7, 2026, no national TSA peak date for Christmas 2026 has been established in the available published guidance.
What is the busiest day to fly before Christmas?
For 2026, the best broad planning estimate is the window from Sunday, December 20, through Wednesday, December 23. AAA’s guidance, updated in September 2026, says airport travel is generally busiest two to five days before Christmas. It is not a prediction of a specific day’s checkpoint count, and a particular airport may have a different peak. AAA’s 2026 Christmas travel guidance is a general pattern rather than a date-specific TSA forecast.
The latest national TSA peak-day projection in the reviewed sources was for the 2025–26 holiday period, not 2026. TSA projected about 2.86 million people would be screened on Sunday, December 28, 2025—the busiest checkpoint day of that season. TSA also projected 44.3 million screenings nationwide from December 19, 2025, through January 4, 2026. These were forecasts issued for that past season, not current or observed 2026 figures. TSA’s 2025 holiday projection concerns checkpoint screenings, not every person flying or airport activity of every kind.
Why airport peaks differ
A national checkpoint peak and a local airport’s busiest day are different measures. For example, the Metropolitan Airports Commission projected that Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) would screen nearly 43,000 people on December 19, 2025, its busiest pre-Christmas day. It projected more than 763,000 screenings at MSP between December 19, 2025, and January 5, 2026; December 26 and 28 were each expected to exceed 50,000. Those were airport-specific projections for the 2025–26 season, not actual counts or a guide to MSP’s 2026 peak. MSP’s holiday travel announcement shows how a local peak can fall on a different date from the national forecast.

- Year: Holiday schedules, demand and forecasts change from season to season.
- Airport: A hub or local airport can have a peak that does not match the national pattern.
- Measure: TSA screening volume is not the same as airline passenger totals, flight counts, fares or road congestion.
- Forecast versus actual: A projected screening count should not be described as a count that was ultimately observed.
Are airports busy on Christmas Eve?
AAA says Christmas Eve tends to have lighter airport crowds than the days just before Christmas. That is a general seasonal observation, not a promise of an uncrowded terminal or a prediction for every airport in 2026. Flight schedules, local demand and weather can still affect a specific trip.
What about the busiest airport travel day after Christmas?
Post-Christmas travel can create a separate return-trip peak. TSA’s 2025 forecast projected December 28 as the season’s heaviest national checkpoint day, while MSP expected more than 50,000 screenings on both December 26 and 28. These past-season figures illustrate that busy return days need not be the same as the busiest pre-Christmas departure day; they do not establish a 2026 return-day peak.

How to plan for a busy holiday airport
- Allow enough time: AAA recommends arriving at least two hours before departure. Check your airline and airport for any trip-specific arrival guidance.
- Consider your flight’s timing: AAA advises winter travelers to consider avoiding the last flight of the day. Severe weather can cause delays that carry into the next day, leaving fewer same-day options to recover.
- Check local updates: Use your airport and airline’s current travel information for checkpoint conditions, flight changes and local disruptions rather than relying on a national peak-day estimate.
- Pack for the checkpoint: Keep essentials accessible in your carry-on and review current TSA screening guidance before leaving. AAA also points travelers to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry as trusted-traveler options.
Do the busiest days also cost the most?
Not necessarily, and crowd forecasts are not fare quotes. In its 2025 holiday outlook, AAA said flights on the days immediately before Christmas were the costliest and Christmas Day flights were cheaper. AAA also reported that its average booked round-trip domestic flight for 2025 was nearly $900, 7% more than the prior year. Those are historical findings for 2025, not a statement of 2026 prices or a guarantee that a particular itinerary will be cheaper on Christmas Day. As of October 7, 2026, the available sources do not establish a national TSA forecast naming the busiest checkpoint day for Christmas 2026. Treat December 20–23 as a potentially busy pre-holiday window based on AAA’s general guidance, not as a confirmed ranking. For a date-specific answer, look for seasonal forecasts from TSA and your airport operator when they publish them.
