Air India ordered 800 CFM LEAP engines in February 2023: 420 LEAP-1A engines for 210 Airbus A320/A321neo aircraft and 380 LEAP-1B engines for 190 Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft, plus spares. CFM called it the largest LEAP order in its history at the time. The order covered the single-aisle portion of Air India’s 470-aircraft announcement—not its widebody jets.
How many LEAP engines did Air India order?
Air India and CFM International announced an order for 800 LEAP engines on 14 February 2023. The total comprises 420 LEAP-1A and 380 LEAP-1B engines, plus spares. CFM described it as the largest LEAP engine order in its history at the time of the announcement. CFM International’s announcement does not state the engine order’s price.
The 800 engines were selected for 400 named single-aisle aircraft; the figure does not mean Air India ordered 800 aircraft. The spare engines are included in the total.

The 2023 engine order was part of Air India’s broader announcement for 470 aircraft. The other 70 were widebodies assigned to different engine makers: Air India said its 40 Airbus A350s would use Rolls-Royce engines, while its 20 Boeing 787s and 10 Boeing 777-9s would use GE engines. The airline said all of its single-aisle aircraft in the announcement would use CFM engines. Air India’s 14 February 2023 release sets out that wider allocation.

What is the difference between LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B?
For this order, the practical distinction is the aircraft each variant was selected to power: LEAP-1A for the Airbus A320/A321neo group and LEAP-1B for the Boeing 737 MAX family. The announcements cited here establish that allocation; they do not provide a comparative performance ranking between the two variants.
CFM International is a 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines. In its February 2023 release, CFM reported that the LEAP engine family had accumulated 27 million flight hours and 11 million flight cycles. It also reported more than 15% improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions compared with the latest production CFM56 engines. Those are manufacturer-reported LEAP-family figures and comparisons, not measured results for Air India’s fleet. CFM’s LEAP overview provides the manufacturer’s engine-family information.

Did Air India finalize the order?
Yes. On 20 July 2023, Air India and CFM finalized the LEAP order and signed a multi-year services agreement covering Air India’s entire LEAP engine fleet. Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the engines and services agreement would help the airline optimize its environmental footprint and operational cost while benefiting customers. Air India’s July 2023 announcement records the finalization and agreement.

Later aircraft announcements add fleet context but should not be added to the original 800-engine order without evidence that those engines are part of it.

- December 2024: Air India said its A320 Family fleet was powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines and announced an additional order of 90 A320 Family aircraft as part of a 100-aircraft Airbus order. That is a later aircraft order, not a revision to the stated 800-engine total. Air India’s December 2024 release describes the aircraft order and engine mapping.
- January 2026: Air India announced an additional Boeing order for 20 737-8 and 10 737-10 aircraft and stated that its 737 aircraft are powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines. It also reported that 51 737-8 aircraft from the original 2023 order were in service with Air India Express at that time. This is a dated aircraft-service snapshot, not a count of engines delivered. Air India’s January 2026 update gives those details.
The official announcements cited here do not establish a final engine-by-engine delivery count or a completion date for the 800-engine order.
