What changed in Air India’s 2023 pay revision?
The Indian Express, carrying a Press Trust of India report dated April 18, 2023, said Air India’s revision covered more than 2,700 pilots across Air India and AIX Connect and more than 5,600 Air India cabin crew. Those are workforce counts attributed to the report’s sources, not independently audited totals. The change was reported as effective April 1, 2023. The Indian Express / PTI report quoted an internal circular announcing a redesigned compensation structure.
A key reported change was the guaranteed flying allowance: it rose from 20 hours to 40 hours. The article contrasted the new guarantee with a pre-pandemic guarantee of 70 flying hours. A guarantee of 40 hours is not the same as a guarantee of 70 hours, nor does it mean every employee would be paid as though they flew 70 hours in a month. The Indian Express / PTI report
The 2023 coverage also described higher pilot flying rates, compensation for ground and simulator time during certain command-upgrade or conversion training, new pilot designations, cabin-crew role levels, service-related rewards, and allowance changes. The Indian Express / PTI report and Mint’s April 17, 2023 account included role-based details, but neither provides a complete public salary schedule suitable for treating every figure as a guaranteed monthly amount.

What salary figures did reports give in 2023?
The Indian Express / PTI report gave these monthly pay examples for the 2023 revision. They should be read as figures reported at that time, not as current Air India rates:

Mint’s April 17, 2023 report presented further role-based amounts and allowances with a modeled salary structure that assumed 70 flying hours per month. That assumption matters: a modeled total based on 70 hours is not necessarily fixed monthly salary, and it is not directly comparable with a 40-hour guarantee. Mint’s report

What do the August 2026 pilot reports say?
Later reports describe additional pilot pay changes, but the two accounts of Air India’s increase do not state the same top-end figure. Both attribute the details to sources; neither reviewed account supplies the underlying company pay circular.

Because the reports differ on the maximum increase—17% in NDTV Profit and 15% in The Times of India—it would be misleading to merge them into one definitive percentage. The available reporting also does not establish a complete current salary table for each rank.

How does the Air India Express proposal differ?
NDTV Profit’s August 24, 2026 report concerned a separate Air India Express pilot proposal, not the Air India revision described above. It reported 40 hours of guaranteed block pay, with further earnings dependent on monthly aircraft utilisation. NDTV Profit’s report
The same report described proposed Boeing 737 fleet allowances of up to ₹21 lakh for senior commanders and commanders and ₹10 lakh for senior first officers, payable in three instalments over three years from October 2026. It also described proposed narrow-body allowances. These were proposal details, not confirmed final policy. How should you compare the figures?
- Check the date: the 2023 examples reflect a revision effective April 1, 2023; the later reports concern changes reported in August 2026.
- Check the airline entity: Air India, AIX Connect and Air India Express are not interchangeable labels for every pay term in these reports.
- Separate guaranteed from variable pay: guaranteed flying or block hours, flying allowances above the guarantee, fixed salary, training compensation and fleet-specific allowances are different components.
- Check the basis of a monthly figure: Mint’s modeled structure assumed 70 flying hours, while later coverage described a 40-hour guarantee.
- Check whether a term is final: reported salary changes and a reported proposal should not be presented as equally settled policy.
Air India’s April 2, 2026 newsroom post said the number of its pilots and cabin crew had doubled since 2022, but it does not verify the salary figures or terms in the later pay reports. Air India newsroom A complete public official current salary schedule was not located in the cited material, so these reports do not establish what an individual crew member would earn today.
