After Uber deactivated his account following a rider’s allegation that he was driving under the influence, Denver-area driver Karim Sawadogo said he spent nearly nine months trying to challenge the decision. He eventually flew to Uber’s San Francisco headquarters, where, he said, a worker restored access to the app so he could submit another dispute. The account comes from Sawadogo’s interview with Joe Wilkins for Futurism, published March 21, 2025; it describes one driver’s experience, not a guarantee about how Uber handles other appeals.
Why Uber deactivated Sawadogo’s account
Futurism reported that a rider complained about Sawadogo after he pulled alongside a Denver police car on Halloween night in 2023. The complaint allegedly accused him of driving under the influence. That is an allegation, not an established finding.
Sawadogo told Wilkins that he does not drink for religious reasons. He said officers searched his vehicle, gave him a roadside sobriety test, and directed him to a 24-hour clinic for a certified breathalyzer and drug test. The report does not include police or clinic records, so it does not independently establish the results of those tests.
According to the report, Uber suspended his account after the complaint. Sawadogo said the deactivation cut off his primary income. He had driven in the Denver area for nearly seven years, completed more than 20,000 rides, and worked more than 40 hours a week, the report said.

How he said he tried to appeal
Sawadogo told Futurism that he challenged the decision through Uber’s AI-powered “Review Center” and repeatedly called for updates. He said he was eventually blocked from calling and locked out of the Review Center. These are his descriptions of the process in his case; the report does not establish Uber’s general or current appeal procedures.
He described the financial strain in direct terms: “I just need a paycheck because I’m going to lose everything.” The quotation and account are attributed to Sawadogo in Wilkins’s report.

Why he went to Uber’s headquarters
After nearly nine months of what he described as financial turmoil, Sawadogo flew from Denver to San Francisco to seek answers at Uber headquarters. He said a worker at the first desk sent him away. During a later visit, another worker took his information and unblocked the app so that he could file another dispute.
Sawadogo said the access restoration took about ten minutes: “I was so surprised, it only took him like 10 minutes to get me back,” he told Wilkins. The report describes restored access to file a further dispute; it does not say that Uber reversed the deactivation or restored his driving income.

What this account can—and cannot—tell drivers
- It describes one reported case. The story documents Sawadogo’s account, not a typical outcome or evidence that traveling to headquarters will help another driver.
- Access and reinstatement are different. In this account, the app was unblocked so he could submit another dispute. The report does not establish that the underlying suspension was overturned.
- The underlying allegations and test results are not independently documented in the report. It recounts Sawadogo’s statements and the rider complaint but does not reproduce police or clinic records.
- It is not a guide to Uber’s current process or legal remedies. The article does not establish the platform’s complete current procedures, applicable law, or what options are available to other drivers.
For personal finances, the clearest point is the income risk Sawadogo described: losing platform access removed his primary source of earnings, while he relied on odd jobs and friends. His experience illustrates the stakes of a deactivation for one worker; it does not show how often this occurs or predict the outcome of another driver’s appeal.
