Set your own maximum purchase price, then keep room in your budget for repairs, maintenance, fuel and insurance. From there, choose between a sporty mainstream sedan—often a more restrained way into performance—and a used luxury performance model, which can offer more power or all-wheel drive but may bring a different service burden.
Start with the budget, not the badge
Decide how much you can spend on the car itself and how much you can reserve for ownership costs. A low asking price does not prove that a car will cost less to own. The available sources do not provide comparable model-specific estimates for repairs, maintenance, fuel or insurance, so do not treat a model’s purchase price as a total-cost comparison.
Price figures also need context. An asking price for a particular car is not the same as a reported median, and a median covering every trim is not a quote for a performance version in your area. Treat dated figures as background, then compare current local listings for the exact year, trim, mileage and condition you are considering.
Choose the kind of performance that fits your use
Sporty mainstream: Honda Civic Si
Edmunds’ March 26, 2025 guide describes the Civic Si as a practical, sporty sedan with a manual six-speed gearbox and predictable front-wheel-drive handling. Edmunds lists 200 horsepower in that guide; verify the specification for the particular model year you shop for. This example illustrates a manual, front-wheel-drive approach to performance rather than a luxury or all-wheel-drive one. Edmunds’ used sport-sedan guide does not establish a current used price or a reliability rating for every Civic Si.
#1 Best Overall
Used luxury sedan: BMW 3 Series
Edmunds includes the BMW 3 Series among used luxury sedans, citing sporty handling, a modern interior, powerful engines and the effect of depreciation on used-market appeal. Those points describe the model family, not a guarantee for every generation, trim or individual car. The guide does not identify one universally recommended year or establish that a 3 Series will be inexpensive to maintain.
Higher-output, all-wheel-drive step up: Audi RS 3
Edmunds describes the RS 3 as a more expensive step up, with a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, 400 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. Its guide presents the car as especially capable for all-season performance; that is editorial characterization, not the result of a controlled comparison with every used sedan. Confirm the engine and output for the exact model year before comparing listings.
Rank #2
These three examples are a way to frame the choice, not a ranked list of the best buys. Consider whether you value a manual gearbox, front-wheel drive, additional power, all-wheel drive, a luxury cabin or a lower purchase price most.
Compare the exact car, not just its model name
A model name can cover very different engines, drivetrains, transmissions, equipment and production dates. Build your comparison around the specific year and trim, then assess the individual vehicle’s history and condition.

- Performance: iSeeCars ranks vehicles by weight-to-horsepower ratio, using curb weight and trim-level horsepower. A lower ratio means less weight for each horsepower to move; iSeeCars notes that lighter cars have an advantage when ratios are close. This metric does not capture handling, braking or how a car feels to drive. See iSeeCars’ performance ranking methodology.
- Powertrain: Check whether the actual car is front-, rear- or all-wheel drive and whether its transmission suits how you drive. The Civic Si and RS 3 examples show how far those choices can differ.
- Price: Compare like with like—same model year, trim, drivetrain, mileage and broadly similar condition. Keep asking prices separate from published medians.
- Condition: A model-level recommendation cannot tell you whether a particular used car has been maintained or needs repairs. Have the vehicle assessed before purchase and account for any issues in your budget.
- Safety: Look up the specific vehicle and its production date rather than relying on a model-year label alone.
Check safety ratings, build date and recalls
Safety equipment and ratings can change within a model year. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) explains that a recommendation may apply only to vehicles built after a specified date when a manufacturer makes a midyear safety change. Check the build date on the certification label, typically on or near the driver’s door, and consult the vehicle-specific crash-test, crash-prevention and headlight information in the IIHS ratings database.
IIHS advises: “Before buying a used vehicle, always check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site for recalls and make sure all necessary repairs are completed.” Use the IIHS used-car shopping guide and check the car’s recall status through NHTSA’s recall lookup. Confirm that any required repairs have been completed.

Use price references carefully
As one dated point of reference—not a performance-trim quote or a local listing price—IIHS’s May 27, 2026 “Safe vehicles for teens” table gives median retail prices for all trims of the earliest applicable model year. The figures below are based on Black Book data from April 2026 and rounded to the nearest $100. The list’s safety recommendations are specific to its stated criteria; inclusion is not an endorsement of a vehicle as a performance sedan.
| Model and model-year coverage in IIHS table | Median retail price | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2020–25 Subaru Legacy | $16,500 | All trims of the earliest applicable model year (2020) |
| 2021–24 Kia K5 | $17,500 | All trims of the earliest applicable model year (2021) |
These medians can help orient a budget, but they do not establish the price of a particular performance trim, the condition of an individual car or what sellers currently ask in your area. See the IIHS list and its price context before using either number in a comparison.

Quick Recap
A practical shortlist process
- Set two limits: a maximum purchase price and a separate reserve for ownership costs. Do not assume the cheaper listing will be cheaper to keep.
- Pick your performance priorities: decide on transmission, drivetrain and the level of power you actually need for your driving and climate.
- Compare exact trims: check the specifications, equipment and local asking prices for the model years you can afford.
- Check safety by build date: review the IIHS ratings for the specific vehicle, including any production-date qualification.
- Check recalls and condition: look up open recalls, verify completed repairs and have the individual car inspected before committing.
- Reassess the full budget: account for the car’s condition and the ownership costs you will face, rather than treating horsepower or a low sticker price as the whole value equation.
