The criminal case was reported dismissed with prejudice on August 10, 2026. That procedural outcome is not, by itself, a finding that the allegations were true or false. A separate Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) civil case concerned statements around an Adani Green Energy bond offering; the SEC later recorded an order dated the same day, but its notice does not establish the order’s terms.
What was the Adani indictment?
Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York announced a five-count indictment on November 20, 2024, against Gautam S. Adani and seven other business executives. The Justice Department (DOJ) case page identifies the matter as United States v. Adani et al., No. 24-CR-433, filed October 24, 2024.
The indictment named Gautam S. Adani, Sagar S. Adani, Vneet S. Jaain, Ranjit Gupta, Cyril Cabanes, Saurabh Agarwal, Deepak Malhotra and Rupesh Agarwal. DOJ described the counts as including conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, securities-fraud conspiracy, wire-fraud conspiracy, securities fraud and obstruction conspiracy. The available DOJ description does not map each charge to a specific count or defendant.
These were allegations, not findings of guilt. DOJ stated that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

What did prosecutors allege?
Bribes connected to solar contracts
DOJ alleged that, from approximately 2020 to 2024, defendants agreed to pay more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar-energy supply contracts. Prosecutors said the contracts were projected to generate more than $2 billion in after-tax profits over approximately 20 years. Those figures describe DOJ’s allegations and projections, not established payments or realized profits.
Statements to investors and lenders
Prosecutors also alleged that the defendants misrepresented anti-bribery practices and concealed bribery while seeking financing. DOJ referred to two syndicated loans totaling more than $2 billion and two Rule 144A bond offerings exceeding $1 billion, marketed in the United States and elsewhere. These are the financing amounts DOJ cited in describing the alleged scheme; they are not measures of proven investor losses.
Rank #2
Alleged obstruction
DOJ alleged that four defendants obstructed the investigation by deleting electronic materials, withholding information from an internal investigation and making false denials to investigators. The indictment’s obstruction allegations should be understood as accusations, not findings about what any defendant did.
How was the SEC case different?
The SEC filed a separate civil complaint on November 20, 2024. It alleged that Gautam Adani, Adani Green Energy’s founder and controlling shareholder, and Sagar Adani, an executive director, were involved in bribery while representing that the company had strong anti-bribery controls. The complaint alleged violations of antifraud provisions of the Securities Act and Exchange Act. It was a civil securities case, not part of the DOJ criminal indictment.
Rank #3
The SEC complaint focused on Adani Green Energy’s September 2021 $750 million bond offering, including more than $175 million in notes sold to U.S. investors. Those are offering and sales figures stated by the SEC, not alleged losses to investors.
In May 2026, the Associated Press reported that the government had agreed to a proposed settlement with civil penalties of $6 million for Gautam Adani and $12 million for Sagar Adani, without admissions of guilt. Those were proposed terms as reported at that time. A September 30, 2026 SEC notice records a qualifying judgment or order dated August 10, 2026, in the civil action, but does not establish the final settlement terms; the proposed amounts should not be treated as confirmed final penalties on the basis of that notice alone.

| Proceeding | Agency and focus | Procedural status |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal indictment, No. 24-CR-433 | DOJ; alleged bribery, investor and lender deception, and obstruction involving eight executives. | Reported dismissed with prejudice on August 10, 2026. The SEC’s notice about its own case does not establish the criminal dismissal’s reasoning or terms. |
| Separate civil securities case | SEC; alleged antifraud violations by Gautam and Sagar Adani concerning Adani Green Energy’s 2021 bond offering. | The SEC recorded a qualifying judgment or order dated August 10, 2026. The notice does not establish the order’s detailed terms or rationale. |
A dismissal with prejudice generally means the dismissed claims cannot simply be brought again in the same case, but the label alone does not explain why the case ended or resolve the truth of the underlying allegations. The criminal order itself was not directly reviewed in the materials available here, so no conclusion about its rationale, conditions or any later appeal can be drawn from the reported dismissal.
The SEC’s notice confirms a dated order in the separate civil action, not the criminal case’s outcome or reasoning. It should not be used to treat the AP-reported proposed civil penalties as final terms without the final SEC order.

What did the Adani Group say?
The Associated Press reported in May 2026 that the Adani Group denied the allegations and called them baseless. That is the group’s stated position, not a court’s conclusion.
