How do I accept donations online?
Work through these eight steps before sharing a donation link. Start by confirming who is fundraising and where; those details affect which services you can use and what you can tell donors about receipts or tax treatment.
1. Confirm who is fundraising and where
Identify whether the fundraiser is for a registered charity, nonprofit, community group, or an individual, and establish the country where it operates. Providers may have different eligibility and verification requirements. Tax deductibility and donation-receipt rules are jurisdiction-specific, so do not promise either until you have checked the applicable official rules.
2. Choose a platform or payment processor
Compare providers against the actual needs of the fundraiser rather than choosing on name recognition alone. Check eligibility, setup effort, payment methods, recurring-gift support, page customization, reporting, payout arrangements, fees, and any integrations you need.

For example, Stripe Payment Links are hosted pages that can accept fixed or donor-chosen amounts and one-time or recurring donations. PayPal describes several donation channels, while CAF Donate offers campaign pages and transaction reports. Square documents donation links with one-time or recurring frequency. Features and availability depend on country and account.
3. Make the donation page clear
Tell donors what the cause is, who receives the money, what donations support, and how to contact the organization. A clear page helps donors make an informed choice and reduces uncertainty before payment. Square’s donation-link setup, for example, allows a title, optional description and image, goal, deadline, and up to two custom fields; other providers offer different page controls.

4. Set donation amounts and frequency
Offer a one-time gift option and add recurring donations if they suit the campaign. Decide whether to suggest set amounts, let donors enter their own amount, or provide both. Stripe documents fixed and donor-chosen amounts as well as one-time and recurring donations; Square also documents one-time and recurring frequency. Confirm how those choices appear to donors in your provider’s current setup.
5. Explain charges before donors pay
Work out the net amount the organization receives after transaction, platform, subscription, and any other applicable charges. A headline processing rate alone may not show the total cost. If donors can cover a charge, make clear whether that is optional and how it affects their payment.

For UK online fundraising platforms, the Fundraising Regulator says fee information should be visible before a donor commits and recommends a worked example, such as showing the deductions from a £10 donation and Gift Aid where relevant. That guidance is UK-specific; check local requirements elsewhere. The regulator’s guidance, updated 4 November 2025, says: “The Code of Fundraising Practice (the code) requires that all reasonable steps are taken to treat a donor fairly, enabling them to make an informed decision to donate.” See the online fundraising platforms guidance and the Code of Fundraising Practice.
6. Verify payout details and plan record-keeping
Complete provider onboarding and any account checks, then confirm that payouts will reach the intended organization or fundraiser account. Decide how transactions will be recorded and reconciled with your existing books. Some providers may conduct additional reviews; exact checks and payout arrangements depend on the provider and account. CAF Donate, for example, describes downloadable transaction reports.

7. Test the donor experience
Before promoting the page, check it on both a phone and a computer. Walk through the donation flow and verify that the amount and frequency choices, available payment methods, confirmation message, and receipt process behave as intended. Confirm that a test or actual donation is associated with the correct payout account, using the provider’s recommended testing method.
8. Share and maintain the link
Place the link on the organization’s website and share it through appropriate email and social channels. Stripe says its Payment Links can be shared by email or social media, or added to a website. Review the page, payment options, and provider terms periodically so that the information donors see remains current.

How to compare donation services
Use the same checklist for each provider you are considering; the best fit depends on the fundraiser’s location, account eligibility, and operating needs.
- Eligibility and location: Can this type of organization or individual use the service in the country where it operates?
- Donor choices: Does it support one-time and recurring gifts, the payment methods your donors use, and fixed or donor-chosen amounts?
- Page and mobile experience: Can you explain the cause clearly and present a usable, branded page on mobile devices?
- Total cost: What processing, platform, subscription, or other charges affect the net proceeds?
- Payouts and account requirements: What account details and checks are required, and how are payouts handled?
- Records and support: Can you export transaction data, send confirmations, reconcile donations, and get support when needed?
- Integrations: Does the service connect with the website or record-keeping tools you already use?
Examples of provider figures—and what they mean
Published examples can help illustrate a fee calculation, but they are not interchangeable rates or universal forecasts. Check the provider’s current terms for your location and account.

What not to assume about online donations
- Tax treatment: Online payment acceptance alone does not establish that a gift is tax-deductible or that a particular receipt must be issued. Check the rules for the fundraiser’s jurisdiction and status.
- Universal legal requirements: Privacy obligations and other fundraising rules depend on location and circumstances; the providers’ feature pages do not settle them.
- Identical service features: Payment methods, recurring-gift setup, reporting, fees, and payout arrangements differ by provider and may depend on country or account.
