USPS lists domestic Priority Mail at 2–3 business days, not guaranteed. Its “In Transit” status means the package is being processed or transported toward the delivering Post Office; it does not, by itself, mean the package is lost. Check the latest scan and follow the guidance for that exact status before deciding what to do next.
How long does USPS Priority Mail take?
USPS’s current delayed-mail guidance lists these Priority Mail delivery standards. They are estimates, not guarantees, and are service standards rather than a reported average of actual delivery times.
| Destination | USPS Priority Mail standard |
|---|---|
| General domestic entry | 2–3 business days, not guaranteed |
| To or from Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands | 2–4 business days, not guaranteed |
| To or from Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Freely Associated States | 2–6 business days, not guaranteed |
These figures are from the United States Postal Service’s Delayed Mail and Packages guidance, accessed in 2026. Business days are not the same as calendar days, so weekends and postal holidays affect how an estimate should be interpreted. Check the tracking details and the applicable service standard for the shipment’s destination.
What does “In Transit” mean?
USPS defines “In Transit” as the package being processed or transported to the delivering Post Office. The status describes movement through the postal network; it is not a diagnosis of a delay or loss. USPS notes that similar facility scans may appear more than once at the same facility or on different days while the item travels.

The useful signal is the newest scan and how it changes over time. A later “Arrived at Post Office” or “Out for Delivery” scan indicates progress toward the delivery address. A repeated scan alone does not establish that the package is lost.
How to interpret the main USPS tracking stages
Label created or “USPS Awaiting Item”
A tracking number and label may exist before the package is handed to USPS. If tracking says “Pre-Shipment” or “USPS Awaiting Item,” USPS’s status explanation indicates it has not received the item. Ask the shipper to confirm the handoff. USPS says tracking information and a delivery date are provided when it receives the package. A shipping partner’s notice that USPS is awaiting the item likewise means USPS does not yet have possession.

“In Transit,” “Arrived at USPS Facility,” or “Departed USPS Facility”
These statuses indicate processing or transportation through the network toward the delivering Post Office. Repeated scans can be normal; use the latest event and its date rather than treating a repeat as proof of a lost parcel.
“Arrived at Post Office”
USPS says the item is being prepared for delivery and should arrive that day or the next postal business day. If there is no delivery or status change after more than one full postal business day, USPS’s FAQ advises submitting a service request to the local Post Office.

The package has been prepared at the local Post Office and is expected to be delivered by a carrier that day. USPS notes that it may arrive at a different time from the recipient’s regular mail.
“Delivery Status Not Updated” or “Awaiting Delivery Scan”
USPS uses these statuses when no “Delivered” scan was recorded by 9 p.m. local time after the item went out for delivery. Its guidance anticipates delivery the next business day. If it remains undelivered, follow the status-specific instructions on the tracking page or USPS FAQ.

- Discover the simplicity of JETZAP Labels: just load them onto your inkjet or laser printer tray—they're pre-cut! Then follow these three steps: 1) 'JET' (print) 2) 'ZAP' (peel) and 3) 'Label'! It's that easy!
- Best value/convenience – JETZAP 4x6 Shipping Labels are simply the best value/convenience there is besides an expensive investment in a thermal printer. Why waste several hundred bucks on a printer you won’t use more than to print several hundred labels? JETZAP Labels have a convenience ratio of 1200 to 3000 so if you print less than that JETZAP Labels are the smart choice! However, use them for whatever other purpose you need! The ink will not say bye bye like your thermal counterpart!
- Pre-Cut - JETZAP Labels are specifically designed to be loaded like regular letter size printing paper on most Ink Jet or laser printers. If you know how to print with an Ink Jet or laser, then you can JETZAP! Just switch your printer from Letter Size to 4x6 and it’s a done deal! No need to rack your brain setting up a thermal printer, install new software, and deal with technical issues… Forget about it! Just JET, ZAP and Label!
- Multiple quantities offer more savings – JETZAP Labels come in packs of 120 to 2000 labels. The more packs you order, the higher your savings will be. Each additional pack comes with additional savings!
- Compatible with most Ink Jet and laser printers. Not waterproof. Not for thermal label printers. In individual 4 x 6 inch sheets. Not as part of a larger sheet or half sheets. Not fan-folded. Please ensure your pinter is compatible with printing label paper and that your printer is capable of printing 4 x 6 inch sheets before purchasing.
What to do if Priority Mail seems late
- Open USPS Tracking and note the exact latest status and scan date. USPS recommends checking tracking information and delivery standards before contacting support.
- Compare the elapsed time with the right standard. Use the destination-specific range above, count business days rather than calendar days, and remember that Priority Mail is not guaranteed.
- If USPS is awaiting the item, contact the shipper. Ask whether and when it was handed to USPS and confirm the tracking number.
- Use the instruction for the current status. For example, after an “Arrived at Post Office” scan, USPS advises a local Post Office service request if more than one full postal business day passes without a change or delivery.
- Allow for operating disruptions. USPS says traffic, staffing fluctuations, severe weather, natural disasters, and carrier-route changes can affect delivery timing.
USPS does not give one universal number of days after which every delayed mailpiece should be considered lost. Its delayed-mail guidance says an item may still be in transit rather than lost, depending on the mail class and how long ago it was mailed. Use the shipment’s actual status and the current USPS instructions rather than relying on a blanket “lost after” rule.

No. USPS lists Priority Mail at 2–3 business days for its general domestic entry, but explicitly marks that standard “not guaranteed.” The destination exceptions above are also listed as not guaranteed.

For comparison, USPS lists Priority Mail Express at 1–3 calendar days, guaranteed, and Ground Advantage at 2–5 business days, not guaranteed, subject to the applicable entries and exceptions in USPS’s table. Compare the calendar-versus-business-day basis, guarantee status, destination, and delivery need; a shorter stated range alone does not determine which service is right for a shipment.
