If you no longer have the details or paperwork, NS&I has a tracing process, and there is no time limit to claim a prize.
Choose the right way to check
| Route | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| NS&I website prize checker | Premium Bonds holder’s number | Checking this month’s prizes, the previous six draws, and older unclaimed prizes. |
| NS&I Prize Checker app | Holder’s number or NS&I number | Checking the latest draw and unclaimed prizes when you have either identifier. |
| Prize history request or written claim | Personal details and, if available, an NS&I number or holder’s number | When you cannot use the online service or need NS&I to trace records using former names and addresses. |
| Phone | Registered NS&I online and phone service access | Asking about a prize you have found but not received. |
Use NS&I’s Premium Bonds prize-checking guidance for the checker and prize history. The website checker updates on the day after the first working day of each month. It covers the current month, the six previous draws, and older unclaimed prizes.
Find the correct number
Holder’s number
The website checker asks for the Premium Bonds holder’s number. NS&I says this can be 9 or 10 digits, or 8 digits followed by a letter. It is not the same as your NS&I number.
NS&I number
An NS&I number is 11 digits and starts with 11, 21, 31, or 41. NS&I says it can be used in the app; it can only be used to check prizes in the app, not the website checker. If you have only an NS&I number, use the app or follow NS&I’s mobile app guidance.

If you have lost the number or paperwork
Use NS&I’s unclaimed-prize guidance and lost-savings tracing service if you cannot identify the Bonds or access the checker. To request prize history by post, NS&I asks for the person’s name and address, plus an NS&I number or Premium Bonds holder’s number if you have one.
If you are writing to claim an unclaimed prize, include:

How to claim a prize
There is no time limit to claim an unclaimed prize, according to NS&I. When you claim a historic prize by post, NS&I sends it to your home address as a warrant; it cannot send an unclaimed prize directly to a bank account. For future prizes, you can choose payment to a bank account or NS&I Direct Saver, or reinvestment into Bonds, subject to the £50,000 maximum holding. See NS&I’s claim instructions and prize-payment information.

How many prizes are unclaimed?
In its October 2026 release, National Savings and Investments reported 2,869,527 unclaimed prizes worth £128,345,775. NS&I also said that over 99% of prizes have been paid since the draw began in 1957. These are figures reported in that release, not a guarantee that a particular old Bond has a prize. The release also gave an October 2026 variable annual prize fund rate of 4.35% and odds of 21,000 to 1 for any £1 Bond number; those figures applied to that draw and should not be treated as current for later draws. See NS&I’s October 2026 Premium Bonds release.
