There is no complete public inventory of Elon Musk’s cars. The available reporting documents a partial history: a few cars he said he owned, several reported past or dated possessions, and Tesla models associated with his role at the company—not a verified list of everything he owns today.

What cars does Elon Musk own?

The clearest first-person ownership evidence in the cited reporting is Musk’s 2006 statement that he owned a McLaren F1. Other accounts describe cars he owned earlier or report a possession as of a particular date. Those claims should not be read as proof of his present-day garage.

It also matters whether a car was personally owned or merely associated with Tesla. Musk’s executive role does not establish that he personally owns every model the company has made.

Car What the reporting establishes Ownership timeframe
1978 BMW 320i Observer reports a used-car purchase for $1,400 in 1994. Historical; kept for about two years, according to Observer.
1967 Jaguar XK-E Series 1 IEEE Spectrum reports Musk owned one; Observer reports he called the E-Type his “first love.” Historical; current ownership is not established.
McLaren F1 Musk said in a 2006 interview that he owned one. Confirmed as a past possession in that interview; current ownership is not established.
Lotus Esprit film prop Observer reports he bought the prop from The Spy Who Loved Me at auction in 2013. Purchase reported in 2013; present status is not established here.
Ford Model T Observer reports Musk said a friend gave it to him. Observer said it remained among his two gasoline cars as of 2024; that does not establish its status in October 2026.

What was Elon Musk’s first car?

Observer reports that Musk bought a used 1978 BMW 320i in 1994 for $1,400, repaired it himself and kept it for roughly two years. The account says an intern later reported that a wheel came off while borrowing the BMW. It does not establish whether the car was subsequently repaired, sold or scrapped.

This BMW is the earliest car in the documented history here, but the reporting does not establish it as his first vehicle in an exhaustive sense. It is best described as an early car he owned, not a current possession. Observer’s account of Musk’s BMW and other cars provides the purchase details.

What is known about Musk’s Jaguar E-Type?

IEEE Spectrum reports that Musk owned a 1967 XK-E Series 1 Jaguar roadster. Observer reports that Musk called the E-Type “my first love” and recalled reliability problems. These are accounts of an earlier enthusiast car, not evidence that the Jaguar remains in his collection.

Did Elon Musk own a McLaren F1?

Yes. In a 2006 interview with Autoblog, Musk said, “I consider the Roadster to be the most exhilarating car I’ve ever driven and I own a McLaren F1!” This is direct evidence that he said he owned one at that time, not proof that he owns one now.

TIME reports that Musk spent about $1 million on the car after the 1999 sale of Zip2 and that he crashed it in 2000. Observer reports McLaren built 106 F1s across all versions, including 64 road cars. Those production figures describe the model, not Musk’s particular car. Read the 2006 Autoblog interview and TIME’s account of the purchase and crash.

Is Musk’s Lotus Esprit a real submarine?

No: the submarine association comes from the car’s role as a specialized film prop. Observer reports that Musk bought the Lotus Esprit prop at auction in 2013 for nearly $1 million. It appeared in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, where it was presented as a submarine. That film transformation should not be mistaken for a normal production Esprit that could drive on the road and then operate underwater.

Observer also reports that Musk cited the Esprit’s design as an inspiration for the Cybertruck. The Lotus is therefore notable both as a film collectible and as a design reference, but the cited reporting does not establish its current status in his collection. Observer’s article covers the auction and film history.

What about Musk’s Ford Model T?

Observer reports that Musk said he received a Ford Model T from a friend. The same article described it as one of his two gasoline cars as of 2024. That is a dated report, not confirmation of ownership in October 2026. Observer is the source for the reported gift and 2024 timeframe.

Are Tesla cars part of Musk’s personal collection?

Some coverage discusses Tesla models alongside cars personally associated with Musk, but a company’s product range is not an ownership record. CarCody distinguishes Tesla vehicles linked to Musk through his company role from cars reported as personal possessions. Without a specific ownership claim, a Tesla model should be described as part of the company’s history—not automatically as one of his cars.

CarCody’s article makes this distinction; the broader record remains a partial public history rather than a complete, current inventory.
