The accounting acquisition date was May 15; RB Global announced the completion publicly on May 18. The deal’s reported $885 million in gross transaction value (GTV) is not revenue: BigIron reported about $86.2 million in unaudited 2025 revenue.
When did RB Global acquire BigIron?
The deal moved from agreement to completion in three distinct stages:
- March 4, 2026: RB Global announced a definitive agreement to acquire BigIron. The companies were to operate independently in the ordinary course until closing.
- April 21, 2026: The Federal Trade Commission granted early termination of the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period, according to RB Global’s April 23 update. This cleared one closing condition, not every condition.
- May 15, 2026: RB Global’s second-quarter filing identifies this as the acquisition date and says RB Global acquired 100% of BigIron’s equity.
- May 18, 2026: RB Global publicly announced that the acquisition was complete.
The May 15 and May 18 dates are not contradictory: the first is the accounting acquisition date in the company’s filing, while the second is the date of the public completion announcement. RB Global’s SEC-filed completion release and second-quarter Form 10-Q record those details.
What does BigIron do?
BigIron operates an agriculture-focused online marketplace connecting buyers and sellers of agricultural equipment, land, livestock and other farm and ranch assets. The acquisition announcement describes BigIron’s activity across commercial assets and vehicles as well as agricultural land and real estate transactions. Successful Farming’s March 11, 2026 report said the transaction included BigIron Auctions, BigIron Realty and Sullivan Auctioneers, which BigIron had acquired in August 2022. That report preceded the deal’s closing.

How large was the deal, and what do the financial figures mean?
The publicly reported figures describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable:

The $15.0 million payment due on the third anniversary is separate from the purchase price. RB Global says it depends on certain employment and non-competition provisions and is accounted for as compensation for future services. The purchase-price allocation remained preliminary in the June 30, 2026 filing and could change during the measurement period. The filing also records $264.5 million in preliminary goodwill, assigned to the Ritchie Bros. reporting unit, reflecting expected synergies, workforce and other intangible assets that were not separately recognized.

RB Global’s second-quarter filing supplies the revenue, purchase consideration and goodwill figures; its March 4 announcement reports the approximate GTV breakdown.
Why did RB Global buy BigIron?
RB Global presented the acquisition as a way to expand its presence in U.S. agriculture and add specialized relationships and capabilities, including agricultural real estate transactions. CEO Jim Kessler said BigIron’s team brings expertise and relationships in the U.S. agriculture market that complement RB Global’s broader marketplace. The company also described the transaction as part of a strategy combining scale with specialized market leadership; these are the buyer’s stated aims, not independent findings about future results.

BigIron co-founder Mark Stock told Successful Farming before closing that the combination would provide a larger platform and additional resources, which he expected to help deliver more choice and liquidity to sellers. Successful Farming also quoted co-founder Ron Stock describing the company’s commitment to an honest, trustworthy auction since its 1984 founding. Those remarks appeared in the publication’s March 11, 2026 report, when the deal was still proposed.

Successful Farming framed the proposed acquisition as further consolidation in the equipment auction industry. The deal does bring BigIron’s agriculture-focused marketplace into RB Global, but the sources available here do not quantify a broader industry-wide consolidation trend. It is more precise to describe this as a significant acquisition that expands RB Global’s agricultural marketplace than to treat it as proof of a measured trend across the sector.
