Could walk-in customers buy a Switch 2?
Best Buy said a limited number of consoles, games, and accessories would be available for walk-in customers. That meant shoppers could try to buy one without a preorder, but the announcement did not promise a console for everyone or confirm inventory at any specific location. Preorder pickup and walk-in sales were separate options: preorders were for customers collecting an order, while walk-ins were subject to limited stock.

Best Buy’s general release-day guidelines say lines form outside near the front entrance before opening and are served first come, first served. The retailer also cautions that a place in line does not guarantee a product, limits vary, and it does not publish online inventory status for limited-release items. Those are general guidelines and do not establish the exact local rules used for the 2025 Switch 2 event.
Did every Best Buy store participate?
The company described the event as taking place at “nearly all” U.S. stores, not every store. The announcement does not identify individual participating locations or their local arrangements. Best Buy’s current store locator can help find stores and check availability by category, but it cannot verify which locations held a midnight opening in 2025.

Best Buy said customers purchasing a console or picking up a preorder in-store at 12:01 a.m. ET could receive a limited-edition Best Buy/Nintendo commemorative coin, while supplies lasted. The coin was not guaranteed.
My Best Buy member certificate offer
Best Buy also advertised a $20 certificate for every $150 spent on Nintendo games and gear for My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members, up to $100. The offer ran from April 2 through August 3, 2025, and has expired; it is not a current savings offer.
