For a more comfortable economy flight, choose the seat benefit you actually want: extra legroom or recline, a two-seat row for privacy, or seats suited to traveling together. These seven options are offered by airlines, but none is guaranteed on every route: the aircraft, seat map, fare, price and remaining inventory all matter. Check the operating aircraft and the live seat map before paying.
How to choose a comfortable economy seat
Start with the trade-off, not the airline name. Published seat dimensions and extra-space labels are not a universal comfort ranking, and an advertised seat type may be absent from your flight or unavailable to book.
- For legroom or recline: Compare the airline’s stated measurements and check whether the specific seat reclines. Exit-row seats can have limited or no recline.
- For privacy: Look for a two-seat row if you are traveling as a pair. These seats may have standard legroom and recline.
- For companions: A paired window-and-aisle arrangement can make it easier to sit together, but it is not necessarily a space upgrade.
- Before purchasing: Confirm the operating aircraft, seat map, fare-specific selection rules, eligibility requirements and total seat-selection price in the airline’s booking flow.
Seven comfortable economy seats to check
1. Japan Airlines SKY WIDER
JAL lists roughly 84–86 cm of seat pitch and 45–48 cm of seat width across the specified aircraft and configurations; individual seats can vary. On the SKY SUITE 787, JAL uses an eight-across layout rather than nine across, adding 5 cm of width. This is a useful option to investigate if cabin width is a priority, but those dimensions do not apply to every JAL aircraft or configuration. Some front-row and bulkhead seats with more legroom cost extra to select.

2. KLM Economy Comfort
On intercontinental flights, KLM says Economy Comfort offers 10 cm more legroom and 4–5 cm more recline than its standard intercontinental economy seat. The section is at the front of the aircraft, behind Premium Comfort or Business Class. KLM also lists a 9–11-inch personal entertainment screen and in-seat power; those features are separate from the extra-space measurements.

3. KLM two-seat row
On most KLM intercontinental flights, two-seat rows are available at the back of the aircraft. They suit a pair seeking a more private layout, not a legroom upgrade: KLM lists standard legroom and recline for these rows. Check the seat map for your flight to see whether one is offered and available.

4. KLM exit-row seat
KLM lists an average of 15 cm more legroom than a standard European seat for its European exit-row seats, and up to 61 cm more than its standard intercontinental seat for intercontinental exit-row seats. These comparisons apply to different cabin contexts, so they should not be treated as one universal measurement. Some aircraft seats may not recline.
Exit-row passengers must be able and willing to assist in an evacuation and keep hand baggage overhead during takeoff and landing. KLM says passengers traveling with children under 12 or pets cannot sit in the exit row unless another adult can sit with them in a different row. Cabin crew may reassign a passenger if they doubt the person can assist. Review the seat-specific rules before selecting.

5. Qatar Airways extra-legroom economy seat
Qatar Airways offers extra-legroom seats in exit rows and bulkhead rows on its aircraft, and on the upper deck of select A380s. The location and availability depend on the aircraft. Use Manage Booking to see what is offered for your itinerary, and check the fare’s seat-selection rules and the flight’s eligibility requirements before purchase.

6. Emirates twin seat
Emirates describes twin seats as a window-and-aisle pair in a two-seat row at the back of Boeing 777 flights and on the upper deck of some A380 aircraft. The appeal is a layout for two, not an advertised legroom upgrade. Emirates says seat reservations may change because of disruption, an aircraft change, or operational, safety or security reasons.

7. ITA Airways Duo Seat
ITA Airways describes Duo Seats as a window-or-aisle choice for travelers together. Its economy seat menu separately lists Extra Legroom/Extra Space seats at aircraft exits; do not confuse that category with Duo. Selection fees vary by fare and route, so check the live booking flow for the itinerary’s price and available seats.

- Open the itinerary’s seat map. Confirm the operating aircraft and the configuration shown for your flight; airline-wide descriptions do not guarantee a particular seat on a particular route.
- Match the seat to your priority. Compare published measurements for legroom or recline, or inspect the map for the two-seat layout you want. A seat labeled extra legroom may have less recline or other restrictions.
- Read the conditions for the exact seat. Exit-row seats have safety eligibility rules. Bulkhead and exit-row positions can also differ in storage and recline.
- Check the live price and availability. Seat-selection charges depend on the itinerary and sometimes the fare. Availability can change, so verify that the seat is still selectable before completing payment.
